Help! Engine fail safe mode on and rough running 4.4V8

04 v8 4.4 petrol & LPG.
Drove over 100 motorway miles yesterday and started fine this morning for a short 20 min run. Then on leaving work tonight.............Ran rough (on both LPG and petrol) and surged between 1000-1200 rpm on starting. has just thrown all the lights at me on starting up. Hdc/susp inactive /emergency brake assist (amber)/ABS amber/DSC amber all on but no engine mgt light.

Engine failsafe mode on too.

Have switched off 4 times and re-started to no avail. Still rough and shaky and engine failsafe mode on.. Batty fine 12.4v. All connections ok.

Any ideas? Big Cry

How new is the batt? Could be a load of issues. Where are you as there might be someone local who can read your codes. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

Update

Am in Fareham, Portsmouth (nr M27 J11).

Called the AA MAN who got there within 30 mins and gave him the key. Bloody thing only started completely normal didn't it! No surging or anything. Smooth as a babys whatnot. B*gger!

However he was unable to read the fault codes on his OBD machine. Car drove fine down to a hotel a few miles away.

Anyone near here got a machine to read codes or know a good indie/dealer in the area?

Engine in fail safe mode will read a fault as throttle position not set or out of range.
Try turning the ignition on (don't start the engine) then push the accelerator to the floor and back then turn off. Start the car normally.

Probably as the above post - the battery is on it's way out causing the early Xmas decorations & EFS mode 5.0 supercharged autobiography

Thanks. Will try the accelerator trick. Its not the battery as it was tested and gave over 12.4v. I also have a back up connected in the boot!

I would also go down the batt route. These cars chew batts for fun. Not 100% sure but I think the amps is the more important thing. Did they just test the voltage across the two terminals? [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

testing the voltage will probably bring up 12.4 volts but you need to have a discharge test done on it where they put a amp load on the battery..

dont understand the backup in the boot thing..auxiliary battery? ... - .- -.

Stan, it's Dan_1984_uk's old car. He put a connected battery in the sunken box to the right of the boot where the tow bar normally goes. This was to counteract the drain that seemed to affect so many owners.

Anyhow it seems to be driving beautifully now. Probably just having a tantrum at me!

BTW, anyone got a fault-reading/reset magic box of tricks anywhere from the M27 nr Portsmouth, up the A34 to J13 M4 then west to Bristol area?

Thumbs Up
