Getting more serious about buying a Defender for fun

Am looking more intently at possible 90 and 110s, want a faily simple one I can bolt things onto and have fun with.

Found this, quite keen to go see it after Xmas, think the ex army idea has died a death, too basic, non PAS etc.

Any thoughts from others?

Anyone got any buying tips? Have started posting on the defender2 site to get more knowledge and bone up on all things land rover. I used to know so much when I poured over every LR magazine every month and I had my series three. Feels exciting to be looking into it again.

Why not make your own 90 size truck but with all the creature comforts, driving aids and most importantly SPACE inside for a 6ft3" lump like me! + you can opt for an TD5 auto which you cant get in a 90/110

Would cost around the same as a Defender 90 too as Land Rovers are that much more expensive...

If its not far from yourself have a look and a drive IF it would suite your requirements an extensive check of the chassis and bulkhead in the air with a hammer will bring a lot of peace of mind and if sound could save you a lot of money and heartache later on next just a general check of machanicals how easy does it start does it smoke excessively after idling for 5-10 minutes has the cambelt been done

Its 20 years old and got 150k it will have clonks , whines and rattles as standard

MAKE SURE ITS NOT A BITSA onto no6 Range Rover

Everyone needs a hobby

Nice Disco Craig - I like it - You won't get far with those tyres though !

I'm quite tempted by a 90 but I prefer Jeeps - here's my toy

I have a 1990 110 V8 County. It has been garaged from new (in my barn now), maintained by Dunsfold who waxoyled it on delivery, now done 115k and runs very sweetly at a pace that often can embarrass regular cars. The previous owner used it to tow a caravan in the summer with his wife and never used the back seats. Hence it has very little corrosion (one tiny patch hidden in the door frame). I have had it for two years, no issues, not even a light bulb. Considerably better than the FFRR that cant go for three months without some failure or other.

My advice is find one with a good history that has had light use. I have friends who went the "it only needs a little work" and have found them to be money pits. My boss has spent £7k refurbishing his and another work colleague had a £2200 MOT this year.

Focus on good rust free bulkhead, chassis and rear cross member. Engines and gearboxes can be costly to rectify too. Avoid heavily modified raised suspension ones, they will be only to the prior owners taste and can be right botch jobs, For me originality is king. Chequer plate is only ever used to hide corrosion................

90's are restricted in space and can be bouncy, 110's more difficult to park and heavier.

I love driving mine, it has the feeling of indestructibility no other vehicle can provide. When I show it, it often causes more discussion and interest than my very original 53 or 59 series. 2018 Range Rover Autobiography

I had the same itch that had to be scratched! They are great fun, practical, cheap to run and hold their value very well.

RRUK - If you feel like a Defender go for it. they are great - had many and sold my last one to get the FFRR. Don't regret it but reckon the itch will return one day.
Craig - personally I love the bob-tailed D2 pickup. Is it yours? Must have been a lot of work!

Yes it is mine and yes it was alot of work. I enjoyed the building of it but its not for the faint hearted, took me about 4 months of out of hours build time. I believe they can be built for as little as £3500 so in comparison its quite cheap when you look at similar aged 90's plus i have an auto box, active cornering system, air suspension, HDC, ABS/TC, Cruise, AC and tonnes more spec. Coped admirably with Salisbury and equally well with a 90mph drive to Manchester 2 days after... Cant match it in MHO

Must admit that i am a bit of a sucker for defenders. Althought they are cramped, noisy, leakey and cold they are great fun and i like driving mine just as much as my my FFRR

This is my current toy and work bus. 2000 td5 90,2"lift winch,BAS remap and alisport intercooler and many more mods to come Thumbs Up

Thumbs Up I like it too.

Looks like you've got a fair stock of spare chassis there... are you expecting some serious corrosion? Very Happy Graham
