Run a jump lead between engine and negative terminal on the battery. This will hopefully rule out a dodgy earth lead.

Are you sure it’s the compressor rather than a bag or line with a weep?
It is highly unusual for a compressor to fail internally. 👍🏻

I imagine it’s something like atf and acetone? I’ve seen seized engines freed up with MMO.

These cars can behave strangely with anything but a perfect battery. Budget to renew every 3-5 years.
I use Bosch when I can.

Any vac hoses you cannot easily get at should be renewed. Vac leaks cause a lot of problems on vehicles of this age.

Likely to be that answer to a lot of things? Sanden on compressors / Pirelli on tyres / Philips er Al on bulbs etc…
I wonder what percentage of a typical car is outsourced?
