Thanks for all the suggestions, I seem to have fixed it.
I think that the starter motor was failing, which killed the already dodgy battery.

IIRC behind the front offside wheel.

I'm at a complete loss now.
The earth strap is fine, and this is backed up by no voltage warnings when running.

Faulty ignition switch?
While I'm not ruling that out entirely, why would it start with the jump pack then? |

I would fit a new Earth strap between the body and engine, it's a very easy way to prove the earth strap rather than finding, cleaning and refitting the originols.

I forgot to say, I tried putting a jumper cable from the battery to the jumper post that it starts from with the jumper pack, and also from the battery to the cylinder head.

Main problem is now fixed. The in tank pump had died.
Replaced that, cycled the ignition twice so there was no air in the clear pipes, and it fired right up.

OK, thanks. I like the talcum powder idea, I'll give that a go.
I think I have a bigger problem, with no fuel coming out of the feed pipe to the fuel filter, so will need to resolve that first. |
