And also the filters, sump gasket, etc? I've read loads on this and now I'm just confused! I've no problem with dropping the sump and doing the flushing, but can I find anywhere that sells all the things I need? Can I hell.
Ideally I'd buy the gearbox oil in bulk - like 20 litres, so I can do another flush 5k or so later - and a couple of filters and gaskets. Doing it like that from Paddock's would cost me over £300 and I know a huge part of that is due to the fact they're selling the oil at 1 litre a pop!
So, if you've done it, where did you buy it all? I'm guessing I could buy the filters and gaskets from BMW, but if they're merely BMW-badged bits from Mann/Febi/Bilstein or whoever, I'd rather not...
The engine oil's easy by comparison - Costco are doing Castrol Edge for £30 for 5 litres.

Perfect! I knew I'd read it somewhere. I've a mate works for Castrol as well, so I'll hopefully have a chat with him this afternoon and see if they do an equivalent - or better - product. And naturally, see if he can do me a deal! Some of the BMW forums suggest that 7045E isn't actually all that special and there are better products out there. I shall report back.

Stick with Texamatic 7045E

I spoke to my 'oil man' who was of the opinion that yeah, 7045E wasn't anything amazing and that any Dextron III ATF would work just fine. He recommended Castrol Transmax Dextron III Multi-Vehicle, but also said he'd have a proper good look at the properties of 7045E just in case there really was a special reason to use it.

Personally I would not put anything else but the correct fluid in. Why save a few pounds on fluid and then have to spend £2k on a rebuild

I'm not basing any decision purely on budget - I agree saving £20 to end up with a £2k bill later on is the sort of folly practised by accounting departments the world over, but if there's a better alternative available, why not use it? Although I can only find Transmax Dex III in one litre bottles, so 20 litres of it will be £200. I'll stick with Texamatic for now!

It is the same with the transfer case oil, which was specifically formulated for the NV225 unit. This is also pricy at @ £10 a litre (fortunately only one litre is needed), but it is not worth using anything else.

If you can get a 20 litre drum of Texamatic 7045E for @ £90, that is still good value .

All interesting reading, thanks. I've an understanding of tribology - essential as part of my job - and after comparing the TDSs for both 7045E and Transmax Dex III I can see very little difference in the two, with the Transmax being mildly superior. But at £10 a litre it's not superior enough.

Which seems to back up LR's 'sealed for life' philosophy. Interestingly, it states Transmax can be used as power steering fluid, which would suggest that the big vat of 7045E I'm going to buy can, too.

If your going to use Castrol insteas of Texaco it should be Castrol Dextron VI. Not Dextrom III as this has been superseaded.
Dextrol VI is on a far better oil.

And have asked who it's made by. If it's OEM or equivalent then I'm buying it and I'll have done a much better flush than I could have with the kit from Paddock's and for less than their pre-VAT price. Happy with that.

Where did you get that from? I've googled the part number and stuck it in eBay but can't find it anywhere. What I can find is the datasheet and I can't see any difference between that and ATF with the exception of the colour...

Interestingly, past the BOT 26 FMB 1 serial number, is the legend 75W90. Which is common or garden diff oil. I wonder just what's so special about the Rangie transfer case that it needs 'specially formulated' oil that's no different to the others?
