Squeaky Rear Suspension

I've done a bit of a search, and guess that as my car sounds like an old pram (quote from another thread - made me laugh), from the rear, that the rear suspension bushes are at fault.

I take it original LR is the best route for replacement, but my query is whether they are actually knackered, or do they just squeak, but are fine ?

Has anyone managed to cure with WD40 or such like ?

Prob have to live with it for a bit and go and get all the bushes changed......

It started when I did a 3 point turn, using a bit of a grass bank. I guess the car hadn't seen such axle articulation for a long time............

Cheers

Folks have had success with WD40/silicone lubricant etc, it is getting it into the right place that is the hard part, using syringes with needles etc to force the lubricant into the bushes.

A good squirt with your preferred lubricant on one bush at a time may help to identify the one with the problem though .

I was talking with a four-wheeler buddy of mine who suggested replacing the bolts with ones that have zerk fittings on them. It seems that the industry has come up with a possible sollution and they are used in extreme conditions. Does anyone know the size of the bolts that are used with these bushings? 2006 HSE

I had to look it up. A zerk bolt has a grease nipple at one end so you can grease the mating face of the bush in situ. Which is nice. .

It's not the bolt that squeaks it's the inside of the bush that wears and salt water enters and damaged the grease which in turn screws the joint

Sadly new zerk bolts won't sort it, new bushes are the only way to go :blub:

Second question is about the bushings and the control arms. Are they both aluminum or steel, and is there a problem with dissimilar metals? 2006 HSE

Sort of going back on what I said at the beginning, I was planning on changing like for like, with genuine Land Rover bushes, but if they are a bit prone for doing this, are the polybush ones the way to go ?

See what you mean about getting access with oil !! 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

As far as I know there are no poly bushes available for the FFRR as yet, plus poly bushes will not give as much comfort as original bushes. Stick with original as they will outlast the time you own the vehicle

@ 47p2

Got any photos of the getting them out and putting back in?

What is the best process to change the lower bush in situ? .

No pictures Joe but here is an excellent write up on the Saab forum showing the procedure and the FFRR is similar. Remember to get a new circlip for the bottom bush when changing it Thumbs Up

The bushes will be as tight as getting a fiver out of Stan's wallet...well maybe not that tight. I used a 5' steel bar and a 7lb hammer to break the rust seal before attempting to pull them through

Just got back from the garage, and apparantly there is excessive play in both rear lower hub bushes........

Will now have to decide what to do.

Is it something I can ignore, and live with the odd squeak ? Probably not, and will at least be raised at the MOT in September........... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8
