The problem with my fog lamps is the silvering which seems to be suffering water ingress

You could always remove the silvering and spray them with chrome paint.
Probably last as long as the original. Idea

You are not alone John, mine are just like that too, but having adapted them to DRL's with LEDs in it doesn't matter quite so much. I too thought about lining with some bacofoil or similar to improve reflection.

You can see all the damage to silvering on mine

You can also see my glasses are quite pitted/frosted, wasn't sure if this was by age or design, yours look much clearer than mine.... .

The lens is plastic Joe, so in theory it should be possible to wet sand and compound back to almost original condition.

Your reflectors look slightly worse than mine, it's my o/s that's the worst

+1 for ali tape thats what i did mine up with, not quite good as new but ok and much better than the mess they were. You can work it into shape without to many creases and polish it after Mine was a blue one! Smile

I decided to try and renovate the old fog lamp and see what sort of results I could obtain, sadly not good enough but it does look better then having lots of corrosion.

The reflector area is an awkward shape and I doubt very much if it would be possible to use the AC tape method mentioned earlier.

I removed the mirrored metal base from the housing and stripped off the silvering using a Dremel with wire brush attachment. I then rubbed out as many blemishes on the alloy as possible using grade 400 sand paper before rubbing over with 1200 wet and dry and 2000 wet and dry. I then spend ages trying to polish the alloy with cutting polish and the Dremel but it must be a cheap alloy as the results were poor.

Plan B and I purchased a rattle can of spray chrome, what a waste of money that was, I would have been better using aluminium paint or even silver paint (note to self to contact paint manufacturers and complain).

The results are not good but is has to be better than all the corrosion

This is the 'chrome' cap that is supplied with the rattle can which should give an indication of the contents.
I wonder what trading standards will have to say...
