rangie does not want to start

my 2004 range rover 4.4 v8 (Bmw engine) does not want to start Big Cry - indie reckons it is the fuel pump, which is ridiculously expensive here in south africa. ive read on rangerovers.net about a person who put another type of fuel pump outside the tank, which was a lot cheaper. however he did not provide a lot of details on what exactly he did and what type of pump he used

is there anyone here who has done something similar or know how to do it

i am still not sure if its the fuel pump as the car drove perfectly until we stopped for about 30 minutes. when we started it, it started but cut out when reversed about 5 metres and thereafter it did not want to start - is it possible that it could be a loose wire or something?

thanks in advance

How much petrol is in the tank - if 1/4 full or less - could be the problem? - but pump will still need changing .

To be sure, maybe open up the tank and see if there is anything clogging the filter. Maybe dirt build up over time has clogged it up. Also replace your fuel filter, I believe that type still has an external fuel filter.

A quick fix could be blowing air through the fuel line, which should dislodge some of the dirt that is clogging the filter/pump (if that is the problem). MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Also, again to be sure, check all your electrical connections, fuses related to the fuel injection/ignition. A connector that is a bit loose, maybe hoses in the vacuum system etc. could have big effects all of a sudden. And since it is an older car in a warm climate, the hoses could be getting "bad" by now. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

UPDATE

an update re my car that did not want to start. after replacing the fuel pump she is up and running again Very Happy . possible cause of fuel pump failure - stealers seem not to have changed the fuel filter for some time so to prevent this make sure the fuel filter is replaced regularly
