Running rich

Amber engine light came up a couple of weeks ago and today I had it diagnosed when plugged in.

The light couldn't be cleared and the feeling is that its running rich due to the k&n filter which was fitted when the facelift was carried out recently.

The mechanic said that because these BMW engines are quite finely tuned the engine isn't running efficiently and should be remapped.

Firstly has anyone else had the amber light with running rich diagnosed?

Secondly has anyone taken the car to a specialist tuner to have it remapped in tune with the engine? Apparently when this is done the BHP also increases giving better performance. 2009 Vogue TDV8 Nara Bronze

I have had that issue forever but I blame it on bad quality petrol here. If you go through my older posts I did about everything you can to resolve it.

One thing I can suggest it to run injector cleaner and "clean" petrol (like V-power) for a while and see if that helps.

Also give the MAF (between filter and engine) a quick clean and just try a standard paper air filter for a bit. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Indeed.

If anything the K&N will cause lean running unless you have clogged it up with too much filter oil.

What error code is causing the CEL to come on? Does that indicate running rich?

TBH I would very much doubt that changing the air filter on its own would require a remap. I suspect something else is going on.....

Cheers

Jerry

I have done a few 2012 conversions on BMW 4,4 petrol FF's and replaced the air filter boxes with K&N's etc without any faults like you have described... Neutral

Does seem odd that the light suddenly came on. Especially as the filter has been on the vehicle for a few months and nothing before.

I will run it on V Power however and see if this makes a difference. 2009 Vogue TDV8 Nara Bronze

Note that mine has been running on the K&N forever and it has not made any difference. The light came on before (with the overly full paper filter) and after K&N installation and it kept going on and off depending on where I got my petrol from.

At the moment I have both banks running rich (used to be only one) and one bank after cat running too lean, now go figure that one Wink

Planning to do an ECU reflash/update tomorrow, see if that helps Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Get a Wi-fi OBD reader from Amazon (about £20) and a copy of Rev, Dashcommand or Torque for your smartphone (if you have one?). You'll be able to check long term fuel trims and error codes for less than £50.

I put on a custom induction kit earlier in the week and my car ran a bit rich, then lean, then rich, then lean and then adapted. Hopefully yours should do the same?

Seems odd that you're having problems on different banks at different times.

I will try the different petrol as I think that cold make a difference. Only problem is the light will need to be reset properly as it won't just go out even if the mixture goes ack to normal again. 2009 Vogue TDV8 Nara Bronze

This is what I use Stan: http://www.amazon.co.uk/WiFi-DIAGNOSTIC-RE...cr_pr_pb_t

Setup was a pain as I can't use th provided mini-cd for instructions (I have a slot load DVD player on my MacBook). However once setup it works great, it even gets picked up by some apps as the more expensive kiwi plx. The plug sits nice and flat too, and the cable keeps the obd flap out of the way of my size 11s.

Problem sorted.

It was a faulty oxygen sensor seemingly.
