Oil level ZF gearbox

Gents,
I am having a thought related to my gearbox "issue" (thread Transmission Fault). I have noticed two things that could be causing it and I would like your thoughts/feedback please.

The transmission fault seems to come on shortly after some "spirited" driving that seems to include turning quite quickly and accelerating quickly as well (not over the top). I was thinking, could that maybe cause a shortage of gearbox oil causing the fault. This is assuming that the oil level is slightly lowish.

The other thing I noticed is that when driving with a constant speed, it also plays up sometimes (but mostly if not always) after a spirited run. The revs start fluctuating a bit and the transmission fault comes on.

So two potential causes, one is a slight lack of gearbox oil due to a lowish level or something to do with the Engine Management (stationary RPM is not very stable at the moment, so I am ordering a new MAF just to be sure).

Thoughts please Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

It's fairly easy to check the gearbox level, just undo the filler plug on the side of the box.

When mine had the megaflush done the chap said that generally they are slightly overfilled at manufacture, he pointed this out by undoing the filler plug and fluid did spew fourth. Unless your has lost fluid it is seems unlikely to be low.

A fluid change can always be beneficial though, mine is much smoother. Discovery 4 HSE

Was the engine running or not when he did this?

The fluid change has been done months ago, I am just not sure if they have done it properly (always an issue here). Also, I don't have anything to fill to the proper level as I can't get to the GB from the top only from underneath.

Does anyone know how they normally fill the boxes while still in the car ? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

No you need one to fill the box.

To check the level you need to have the fluid at the correct temperature (43°C for the TD6) not sure what yours is. When the fluid is at the correct temperature you start the engine and remove the filler plug on the side of the gearbox, there should be almost no fluid comes out when you do this although sometimes you will get a small amount, leave the plug out until the fluid stops dripping and then refit the plug. If you remove the plug and no fluid comes out it will require more fluid

Will do the check first and will have a look if I can get one of these big syringes in case I need to top up the fluid level.

Check temp (30 to 40C if I remember correctly) is ambient temperature here : 30+ C, so need to let the box cool down overnight MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

The engine has to be running to allow the fluid to go through everything. If you remove the plug with the engine off you will get covered in fluid
