One key can't turn ignition on

Hi,

I have two keys on a 2005 facelift TD6. One that works everywhere but is ugly, one that works everywhere incl. remote operation, but not on the ignition and that is brand new (car is imported from italy through a french reseller so it's not easy to go back to the original owner).

My question is: Is it possible that the key works fine, including remote operation and that the transponder needs reprogramming? Do the official dealers handle this?

Thanks!

The transponder is a tiny thingymedo in the fob. When I say tiny, I mean about 6 mm long, 3 wide and 2 thick. It sounds like your new key was not ordered to the correct VIN as they are "factory" supplied and not dealer programmed.

The factory programs the transponder to your car ECU based on the VIN. Looks like the key has not got the right programming.

Getting the key to open the doors with the fob is "learned" in the car (with a working key there and used in the programming cycle).

If the key fits the locks that means that it has been cut correctly as well.

Maybe just a bad transponder that needs to go back to the factory key supplier, through the dealer. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

new fob from land rover can only be ordered with a VIN, so if the key did come from LR it will be correct to your vehicle, just sounds like it needs programming in at a dealer. You can paypal direct using - www.paypal.me/duckworthparts

Thanks to you both, that's perfectly clear. It looks like the key wasn't made after the VIN, meaning the transponder (that I had spotted in the key) isn't operating.
I'll try to have one new for free from the dealer.

edit: from the seller (that will deal with dealer).

I may not have been clear. When you get the correct key, it still needs to be "programmed" to the car as Dan said. I have done it for my three keys (two existing and a new one) using the Faultmate. Basically you are telling the car that those keys are accepted as useable keys.

If you loose a key or it gets stolen, the transponder in it can still start the car. So the programming is telling the car which keys may be used. A key that does not have the correct transponder can not be programmed to start the car but a key with the correct transponder still needs to be programmed.

Hope that makes the muddy business of keys a bit clearer ??? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

I think I had understood correctly. Unless the transponder is factory programmed the car won't start.
This is independant from the key being able to remotely open doors.
The remote operations programming can be done locally either at the dealer, or using a faultmate or other home made techniques I've seen on the forum but not the transponder.
Correct?

If I'm not mistaken you could always change the working transponder from the old key to the new key. Simple job.

Making the doors open and close you can do without the "computers" like the Testbook and Faultmate and the likes. That is a simple procedure you can find on the site here by doing a search. Make sure you do all the keys.

But the Faultmate/Testbook etc. are needed to make the keys with the correct transponders work with your car. What could be is that your new key has a correct transponder but has not been "mated" to the car. That is where the dealer/computers come in.

So the programming of the transponder itself is done by the factory supplier of the keys or even in the factory based on the VIN. Then getting that key to start the car needs "mating" of the key to the car. It is telling the car which keys (each key has unique identification codes) it is allowed to accept (so a stolen key will no longer work even though the transponder is correct). This is done by the dealer using the Testbook or using a Faultmate etc. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

ok, thanks for these explanations so adding a new key (with new transponder) always requires an intervention on the car (faultmate, t4 or whatever) Sad So what do people usually do on the forum?
Buy a key such as this one http://cgi.ebay.fr/LAND-RANGE-ROVER-3-BUTT...a2683dc63, have it cut, then binded with a testbook or faultmate?

The transponder should work without going through 'the procedure' of syncing the key. When you purchase a new key it will start the vehicle without going through 'the procedure'

The procedure is only to operate the remote control door locking/unlocking side of the key.

When you put the key in the ignition does it click and unlock the steering?
Does it turn in the ignition?

When I got my new key from the dealer, I had to take all three keys and "tell" the car that these are not the active keys using the Faultmate. It did not work on the ignition/steering lock at all until I did the key learning procedure.

Opening and closing the door you do with one working key in the ignition and then the button pressing procedure. Again all keys (in my case three) that you want to use for the car. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Ok, just to make sure that I understand, can someone post the step by step process & sources to get from 0 to a complete working key (excluding remote part if needed since it's been widely covered).
Thanks a million Wink
