Just to be sure. Steering clunk.

My Rangie occasionally will make a sort of "clunk" sound which can be felt through the steering when maneuvering at low speed and moving the steering from lock to lock.

Trackrod or droplink? Or maybe ball joint? 2006 FFRR 4.2 Supercharged Vogue SE

I had a good look around the suspension this morning. With the wheels on the ground I can rotate the right, front ARB drop link just by grabbing it with my hand. The left front is solid.

I'm assuming that this is not normal and that the droplink is shot. Can someone confirm? 2006 FFRR 4.2 Supercharged Vogue SE

Hmm, I'm not convinced it's the droplinks now. I'll swap them anyway though.
I just had my mate sit in the driver's seat and turn the steering so I could listen and watch. The clunk can be felt through the right front wheel and seems to be emanating from around the steering rack area.
It's weird, almost like something is catching and then letting go with a clunk. It's pretty loud.

I'm actually concerned that it might not be safe to drive. 2006 FFRR 4.2 Supercharged Vogue SE

I don't think so. It certainly doesn't sound like it's coming from that area. 2006 FFRR 4.2 Supercharged Vogue SE

I had the same and it was a lower ball joint, but I also had other symptoms of clunk after potholes and a loud squeal when turning wheel to the right.

No other symptoms. It's just the clunk when turning the steering. 2006 FFRR 4.2 Supercharged Vogue SE

If replacing parts, it is going to be cheaper to work your way from the outside in towards the rack!

Does it do it if you take the weight off the wheel?

Does it do it if you disconnect the track rod?

If yes to the above then would appear to be the rack, if not, after replacing the ARB links, track rod ends, and lower ball joints next. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

I did the ARB droplinks today and noticed something that didn't seem right to me.
The OSF one was under a fair bit of tension but the NSF one was able to be removed easily. This was with the car on level ground.
The car does seem to roll more when turing right than left so this could be the reason. Not sure what the cause it though unless it's the ARB itself that's bent.

Didn't fix the clunk though. I just got my mate to sit in the car and turn the wheel to make it clunk while I lay underneath holding things and listening. Lower, right ball joint is my assessment. Odd though because that one was changed about 2000 miles ago according to the service record. 2006 FFRR 4.2 Supercharged Vogue SE

It's possible. Both links are caked in crud but I didn't think to examine them closely to be certain which one has been changed. I'll get it up on the ramps tomorrow and take a look properly. 2006 FFRR 4.2 Supercharged Vogue SE

Well, the clunk is getting much worse now. I'll take it in to Rovertune when I'm back from holiday and get them to have a good look.
