It'll probably be the microswitch. They get bent, don't make, and send the mirrors back out again. Here is a link to joe90's post...

It can also happen that someone pushed one mirror in or out by hand causing it to lose the home position. Happens with mine sometimes when the mechanics have worked on the car. Battery reset seems to cure it. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Or check wiki for other solutions, double pressing button quickly etc. There is a lock out if you do it too much. .

Does anyone have any tips on how to remove the upper trim around the window as I am going to replace the door mirror?

Take the bung out, its just a cover. There is a fairly large philips screw behind it.
