When I push my washer stalk forwards to get rear screenwash, it is intermittent - I get water, but sometimes takes 4 or 5 sweeps of the wiper blade before it appears, and then it isn't constant - I can hear the pump running, but that isn't constant either. I noted on another thread about sticky main beams that Cam Tech Craig had advised the switch could be breaking down and wondered if that was what was happening here - but don't know if I should get water straight away, and if if should run constantly while the switch is operated - only had the FF for 3 weeks and still getting used to everything.  2006 (56 Reg) 4.4 V8 Vogue In Bonatti Grey (Gorgeous!!)

Our rear wiper doesn't produce water when the stalk is pushed forward but I'm interested to read that you can hear the pump working. Our rear washer has never worked since getting the car so I've never actually heard the pump working. Apologies for the stupid question but does the pump noise come from the front or back of the car (where us the pump actually situated please)?

The pump is at the front, if it takes a while for the water to arrive it is the non return valve in the top of the tailgate which it scoobied.

They are easy to swap and cost a couple of quids, search for non return valve and there is plenty on here about the problem. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

It's a bad design judging by what happens over time. You may be lucky and the valve swap sorts it, but it didn't with mine.

The water path goes through the middle of the motor, using rubber seals that fail through age / heat etc. some water seeps into the motor mechanism, which in extreme cases either rusts up the motor and the wiper moves a few inches and stops, then when operated again, another few inches. Or sticks vertically down. Mine got stuck there, for a few days.

No water came through or hardly any in the end, and what did used to take an age.

Others have had rusty water pumped into the inside of the car as it leaks down the inside of the rear trim / window.

Others have had success stripping the whole unit and replacing o rings. May be in the wiki.

I fixed mine by taking it to a garage and having a brand new unit fitted. Wiper flies across the window with water there pretty much straight away.

The first part of the forward push on the stalk just activates intermittent wipe. Pushing further past the spring activates water.

Water should flow constant whilst held forward.

New motor was £220 fitted.

Thanks both. Have seen NRV threads before but when reading this post, it did strike me that I've never heard the pump actually working when pushing the stalk.
