Big fuse joining fusebox to power, or chassis. Very common on BMW cars. Its a wide thin piece of Alluminium.

I had a complete electrical loss recently, and it was alternator failure as it shorts the battery.
A Censored of a job with a TDV8 4.4. If the top 1/3 of the fan shroud is cut off it saves about a day of work as you can then unscrew the fan
then you can get to the alternator. (I believe earlier models were in 2 pieces). then join the shroud back together with a plate and self tapping screws. I think with this small mod I could now do it again in a day. Previously......

check there isn't a back up battery installed in the rear right compartment where you normally keep the tow hitch. I had one (put there by previous owner) and it drained the main battery and I lost all power whilst driving.
