Had some damage due to road works, need advice

In the village i live the council have contractors re-surfacing the roads, i drove down one yesterday and the men where working and allowing cars to pass, theres 20 mph signs. i was doing 10-15mph as the roads was covered in loose stones. pretty quickly i new something was up and when i stopped i found 2 tyres cacked in sticky tar and covered in stones, also the rear quater of the car and the wheel arches where splattered with thick tar.

I stopped and talked to the workers who basicly gave it not my problem guv but gave me there managers number. i got home as only a few mins away from road works and called him and demanded he came to my house asap which he did.

Cut along story shore he admited liability and he also then closed the road as other cars where getting tar on them. He said he would fit new tyres and have a valeter come and clean/corect the bodywork. Today i went and had new tyres fitted and the company paid for them but im now getting the run around with the paintwork, i wont let them get away with it but if i can sort it myself i will because my ffrr is looking very sad at the moment and i always have it spotless..

So any ideas on a way to sort the tar out ?

Soak it with white spirit, leave it for 15 minutes and then wipe off.
Given the amount of tar on your car you may need to do it a couple of times.
Filthy job to do.
I hope you still have the tyres that were removed, they would clean up easily.

WD40 does work if you leave it particularly on lighter tar spots but white spirit has worked for me in the past.
Put the white spirit in a household spray bottle and spray it on.
You do have to be patient and let the tar soften. Thumbs Up

When the white spirit has soaked for a while it may be worth agitating with an old paint brush to loosen it, it's certainly pretty thick.

White spirit as suggested - or auto glym tar remover - BUT be really careful as there will be small stones in the tar and if you go rubbing at it you will end up with scratches. I personally would contact a detailer to come and correct the car and either bill the company or sue in the small claims court.

Good luck with it - no wonder you are cheesed off!

Thanks

yeah im hoping they will stick to there word and have a detailer come over as they did pay for the tyres, but at the moment im just getting he will call you to arrange to come over then he dosent call, so i chace contractor and get same line that he will call me.

Contractor is a large national company, i think best option if not sorted in 7 days is for me to get a detailer to sort it then small claims court to get money back..

cheesed off isnt close, car if filthy and i dont even want to wash it as one side is trashed...

Soaking it with tar remover, then jet washing it off should get rid of the bulk of it. Then give it another dose of tar remover to get rid of the residue. Even just jet washing should get loads of it off.

I'm not sure id bother too much with the stuff on the plastic arch liner, that'll wear off after a winter.

no way i want to leave the arches like they are as it just attracts more crap to stick to it plus they look terrible in the flesh..

Just had the detailer guy call and has asked me to email pictures so he can take a look, he is saying he is very busy and talking weeks rather than days until he can fix it subject to seeing the pictures that is. Says the contractor has just given him 13 vehicles to sort as seems its not just me and thats on top of his other work !

Hi suggs, feel your pain, resurfaced the road outside our property on Saturday, tar and grit, then last night found a leaflet in post box that they would be coming again today to put a bonding layer on top and no vehicles can run on it for at least 30 mins luckily didn't have to go anywhere after they did it, but cars coming down the lane didn't half sound sticky. When I went to close the gates the tar or bonding is still tacky. Hope you get sorted soon.

Whistle Diesel kills Tarmac Whistle , That's why they have to resurface the road after a lorry has had a fuel spill, also we used to use it to remove tar left on our diggers after the tarmac boys had hired them Wink Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

^what miggit said.

Our contractors use diesel to stop the Tarmac sticking the tools (barrows, shovels and raikes) when the do drives for us., soak it in diesel should work.

They do a lot of tar spraying round here, it's a real pita, a cheap way of extending the life of a road surface! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
