Ta Cam. I didn't know that. I assumed it has a transmission break. So the purpose it to just find a noise from a CV, diff, or prop shaft? ______________________________

Ok an update, I jacked up and turned each wheel while it was in Park. No noises detected anywhere, and front and rear prop shafts turned as normal. Also, when the engine is running and its in Neutral, the transmission makes the same sound as Drive and Reverse. I'm sure it didn't do that on Sunday when we were getting dragged by another car to a safer stopping location. Finally, it now won't let me select Drive if the engine is running. ______________________________

Has anyone had experience fitting a transmission and transfer box from a facelift L322 3.6 tdv8 to an early L322 3.6 tdv8?

I might have a donor box. ______________________________

Different canbus protocol in MY10 I suspect and if so then the TCM is not compatible, contrary to my earlier assessment. The mechatronic might be swappable.

The above is correct. Same gearbox, but the electronics work on a different CAN-BUS, and not compatible.

However, if your electronics are OK, then you can (in theory, at least) swap them over int the newer box Thumbs Up

Just swapping the TCM and not the valve body is not so straightforward as I understand. A local workshop thought they could put a MY12 6-speed into an early D3 and even after swapping the whole mechatronics still had problems with the box.

The RR finally went to my usual Indy this arvo.

First impression after hearing the noise was front diff. It makes the noise in neutral so front diff doesn't make sense to me. Will find out more tomorrow maybe when he gets it onto a hoist. A diff sounds cheaper. ______________________________

The mechanic didn't get a proper look at it today. However, he thinks the noise is from the transfer case. And the noise is the gear in between High and Low range. I'll have to have another look at RRPhil's post on the transfer. ______________________________

Would appear to be a transmission issue then, rather than something downstream. It’s just that we’ve had a couple of instances on here of 6HP26’s failing because the output shaft hadn’t apparently been coated with anti-seize grease at the factory and the spline into the transfer box had subsequently failed/worn away through fretting corrosion. Anyway, if your park lock holds then this would rule out this particular cause.

I think you are on the money Phil.

The Indy has ruled out the electrics on the transfer box. The next thing is transfer box out to check the spline.
