Our SC has only ever been serviced by main dealers and has been done every 12 months regardless of mileage when looking back through the receipts and service book.

Just recently I've noticed that the economy has dropped (not that I really watch it but I've noticed it's needed filling more often).

Today on a run I decided to sit at 56mph with the cruise on and it was only averaging 25.1mpg (reset the trip after putting the cruise on), I know it can do more then that as I've measured it once before when sitting in average cameras at 60.

After a run of around 20 miles I got out and felt all the wheels, mainly the rears in case the calipers were dragging, all the wheels were stone cold. I checked the tyre pressures, they were all spot on as well.

Once I got home I decided to whip the air filter out and have a look and it was pretty disgusting. The car was only serviced 2k miles ago by the main dealer but I've noticed that the air filter doesn't get replaced at every service when following LR service schedules.

I'm going to order one from Dan tomorrow, but was wondering if there's anything else that's worth changing at the same time that isn't done on every service such as spark plugs, fuel filters etc?

My last service receipt shows oil filter, pollen filters and oil and judging by the fact the oil is still golden I'm fairly confident the work was done and they've not just taken the p!ss.

Any thoughts and opinions would be appreciated

I've just looked on Rimmer Bros. website, for "Genuine LR" spark plugs they want nearly a tenner a plug

i remember changing the plugs was the regular 'thing' to do on the old cortina's and mini's..... ... - .- -.

On all of the P38's I've had I've given them all a big service just as I've got them (all filters, plugs, and all the fluids). At least on the P38's you can change the plugs in 10 minutes as they're easy to get to. With a Halfords trade card plugs for the P38 worked out at about a quid a plug too!

I commented on this exact same thing a while back, we've had ours serviced regularly by a main dealer, but the last service our local guy did it, and guess what, air filter filthy and the spark plugs had not been changed for a long time. One of the comments on my thread was that these days plugs are only changed every 100,000 miles!
Anyway, main dealers will only see it now if it's something that our local guy can't do!

The plugs for the 4.2 SC are NGK IFR5N10.

Looking on eBay, around about a tenner a plug doesn't seem that far off the mark!

It's a lot like cam belts. the manufacturers run lots of engines on a test bench, and see how long it takes before the cam belt snaps. Then they pick a figure somewhere below the average as a service interval. It does no harm to change them before they get to that.

David, as a general rule of thumb on my own car... If JLR say it needs changing at 10k or 100k i will change it at 5k or 50k! I do VERY low miles! I personally believe time can do as much damage as miles on certain components hence the rule of thumb

We adopt a similar approach when it comes to servicing customers cars too. Things like air & fuel filters are left for way too long if following JLR schedules on some models IMHO... I believe the small amount more we charge at point of service will not only return you reliability & good/better longterm wear but will more than pay you back ten fold in fuel savings between servicing...

But then i guess thats why good indie’s are worth finding, as we get to think outside the JLR box, use common sense & save customers money

I've PM'd Dan for plugs, an air filter, front and rear diff, transfer box and gearbox oil and a filter as well. Might as well give her a good service whilst sorting her out.

Since Its service in December it's only covered 2k miles so won't do it any harm to have it all changed.

Well a box of goodies arrived from Dan this afternoon so I put the SC on the ramp in the workshop and set about giving it a good service.

I changed all 8 plugs, the Supercharger oil (not from Dan), the air filter, front and rear diff oils and the transfer box oil.

None of the plugs looked particularly bad and they were all the same colour. The ground electrode on some most of them was worn away on one edge. I've tried to take photo's of this but I'm not sure they've come out very well. All of the plugs were very tight to get out to the point where I was loosening them a bit and tightening them a bit to work them out through fear of damaging the thread in the cylinder head. They all came out and went back in without a great deal of fuss though. I'm positive they were the original plugs.
