So, let me get this right, you can buy a tyre that says M+S (mud and SNOW) on the sidewall and it is a summer ONLY tyre

Why are they allowed to mark a tyre suitable for SNOW but you aren't allowed to use it in the winter????? Pete

If it says mud and snow are you allowed to use it on asphalt or concrete. Should they do tyres for spring or autumn, what about tyres for wet leaves. letters not necessarily in the right order

Winter tyre markings

Winter tyre markings explained: M+S
M+S symbol
The "M + S" symbol on a tyre sidewall denotes the tyre has performance capabilities for mud and snow conditions. For snow, this means a tyre's tread pattern, tread compound or structure are designed to achieve performance, better than a normal tyre, with regard to its ability to initiate or maintain vehicle motion in snow.

Winter tyre markings explained: Alpine
Alpine symbol
The "Alpine" symbol identifies winter tyres according to UNECE regulations (valid in the EU and various other countries) and the tyre regulations of the USA and Canada.

The snow performance of these winter tyres has to be proven by objective tests and meet or exceed defined limits. These tyres provide high performance with regards to safety and control on snow, on icy road and in general at deep temperatures.

Special case 4x4/SUV tyres
Many SUVs and off-road-vehicles are equipped with tyres carrying the "M+S“ symbol on the sidewall. The reason for this is the vehicle category was first offered in North America where all-season tyres with the "M+S“ symbol are customary. Within the tyre portfolio of Continental this applies, for example, to the product lines ContiCrossContact LX, ContiCrossContact LX Sport or Conti4x4Contact.
The "M+S" marking is officially defined in an EU directive as meaning: “a tyre with a tread pattern and structure designed to better performance in snow than that of a normal tyre”. The performance of “M+S” marked tyres is therefore neither defined nor measured.

The snow performance of winter tyres is specified in North America with the so-called "Alpine" symbol. Only tyres which meet or exceed these requirements may carry the "Alpine" symbol.

Continental recommendation
Even though "M+S" marked tyres are required by law during winter in some European countries, Continental recommends to use winter tyres with the "Alpine" symbol on the sidewall and a tread depth of at least 4 mm in wintry conditions.

Continental with M&S Marking: can be used in light snow but they are Not 7 degrees and lower softer Winter tyre compound with Winter Sypes. You want to be safe on snow/ice you need proper Winter tyres. German winters are nothing like UK winters especially in the south.

Oh great.... so it's now the Yanks fault......

Not exactly a satisfactory system is it.... but if it keeps our friends on the other side of the pond happy then I suppose we shall have to live with it... Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Pete

M+S simply refers to the tread blocks - if they are open enough to self clear mud & snow and not get clogged up, then they are M+S.

Winter tyres have to be good for more than just snow - specifically cold wet roads.

Whilst something like BFG MT's might be great on mud or snow, I really wouldn't fancy them on a cold wet motorway.

Designated winter tyres are higher silica rubber, so it stays more flexible at lower temperatures & have lots of little sipes - pictures here - which help grip on ice and generate extra heat.

It's clearly a complicated area Big Cry

11 pages about someone confusing M+S tyres with proper winter tyres. I think there are more important things in life happening right now. Thanks for the banner, we need some unity and understanding instead of a fight about trivial matters. Enjoy life, it is precious these days! We burried a victim of the Paris attacks in St Tropez today. RIP. Je suis Paris.

Don't have any sides here but I can understand Angel's frustration: Not picking up the phone a no reply to pm's is a no no and not acceptable Neutral

I'm not sure what Angel hoped to achieve but whatever it was, it has caused collateral damage. This thread reflects poorly on Angel, Craig and the website. These major actors all come across badly.

A Pyrrhic victory at best.
