Brake failure safety issue please read

Hi all - I was driving along last week and by front brakes began to judder like they were warped , I toyed with the idea of living with it or getting new discs and pads . I like things just so so I ordered the bits from dan. Anyway whilst waiting for the discs to arrive I was driving along and had to brake fault hard and the front brakes made a horrible noise and the brake pedal went spongey and barely stopped anything... it's also was making a chuffing noise like an old steam engine. As this was now a saftey issue and I didn't want the wife or baby in it I parked it up until then it's arrived...

Then it's arrived (thanks dan) and I got going.

The original discs still had loads of meat left so was surprised and they were genuine lr parts.

I started taking it off and I saw something I'd never seen before... it had started to collapse in on itself at the vents- they rotten away. It was so bad I could press the two discs together with my thumb and index finger!

I can believe a company like lr would build a disc like this, I don't know if it's unique or not or it's not treated but this could be potentially dangerous...

So if you get brake judder take your wheels off and inspect your discs!

Excess corrosion, caused by lack of use by the looks of things...

Wow, seen some duff brake rotors in my time.

you were lucky the inside face didn't detach!!

Looks as if the ribs have been fractured for some time, I'd be interested to see the disc broken open to see the broken faces. Was it only one or both??

Wonder if this has been caused by thermal cycling over many years, or a mismatch of the ribs during the manufacturing process, or as stated just rust. They look original/elderly. Regards

any idea how old the discs are age wise. Yes they might have a lot of meat left on them, but the level of corrosion seems quite excessive, never seen this on a disc before, even on the Mrs skoda which had 9y.o discs on it when i changed them.

there is a fair lip on the discs, but this seems an age and condition related failure rather than failure through use. Bad though. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Well the first point is they were front so I doubt theyd really have corrosion from slipping a boat if it was the rears definately would think that's a possibility...

Secondly the cars done 145k miles and my friend was doing them with me is a bmw mechanic and he said there's no way on a BMW they'd do that many miles with that amount of meat on them but i don't know it does sound a tall order but maybe they were original?

Looks to me like someone has been playing at the beach, that is classic sea water corrosion, no way they are original with the wear on them...

If I were you I'd pop the sill covers off and check them, they can be very rusty under there on cars that haven't been swimming in the sea so yours need checking...

My slightly rusty ones

you never know how a previous owner has treated a car do you?. Seen some real horrors on trailers that have been in the sea over the years I now replace all moving parts as needed on trailers now in the winter . Its about time the old Toyota boat puller got treated to new discs etc even though where done two years ago bet there no better than dans and done hardly any miles

I had a Shogun Mk3 (2003) 3.5V6 do exactly the same thing, and they were original discs (it had 65k miles on it). As soon as I noticed the pedal pulsing, I took the wheels off at the next opportunity to see what the flip was going on. The two halves had parted in several places on both discs, but thank god not completely.
