hi
i am left with one pipe, i cant see where it goes
any ideas
the car is to low at the moment, it didnt rise up on the suspension and it cant trace it at the moment

 RR 2005 4.4 petrol

this thermostat is driving me daft TI 32 88
i ordered one from Latvia, wrong one
been trying to get one at a reasonable price, just going round in circles
ebay Australia $77.31+$7.73GST + $81.90 postage
ebay UK 83.95 pound+postage????
so in the UK they are twice the price
i was trying to buy one from onlinecarparts 42.37pounds but it got to hard RR 2005 4.4 petrol

You have done bloody well with only one pipe, that is your diff breather and tucks under your plastic coil cover




Thermostat, there is a standard BMW one i think now that is reasonable or you can do the mod like i have but mine was a pig to bleed after, there are a few really good threads on here with loads of part numbers to the mod and standard kit.

I have one of these in my garage which wasn't cheap but much cheaper alternatives now, there is a nice long list of alternative part numbers to google at the bottom of the amazon listing

There are a few online car parts websites with .co.uk addresses but are actually some other country and there are several addresses which are all the same company and potentially fraudulent so i try and stick with the well known ones.

the dash light is showing that there is no charge to the battery, so weather it is the alternator or i have disturbed the wiring i dont know RR 2005 4.4 petrol

It was the first question i asked when i first got my fatty, I had the same pipe in the same place.
i also have red cam covers ..
The alternator wiring is the most likely if it was working before, have you put the big cable back on it ??

Give this little blighter a waggle or make sure it hasn't bent over a pin when connecting

yes , it was the wiring, i haven't started the engine yet to check but i had not put the main 12v wire back on RR 2005 4.4 petrol

the right one, at last, cost me just under 80 pound RR 2005 4.4 petrol

That is about what i paid for mine and then didn't use it but used the 80 deg mod kit instead.

These can be a bitch to bleed as you may know already but mine was even worse with the 80 degree mod kit for some reason.
i raise the front of mine and burp all the pipes i can get my hands on without losing a finger in the fan or belts.

Well, at long last I have got it all together, almost,
Went round the block in it, about four kilometer.
Lovely thing to drive, I thought I would take it up to the speed limit, 70km, so I looked at the Speedo, I was already do 100km, wont be doing that again
The red amigo was on before I left and half way round the other two came on, the engine warning light is also on some times.
When I had this so it would start (no rad etc) as soon as I touched the starter, it started, I ran it for about five sec and switched it off and that’s after it being stood for well over a year
Now it is hard to start, if fires up and cuts out like its out of fuel, after a few tries it runs
The engine has a constant miss.
I coupled up the iCarsoft (I have forgotten how to use it and am having difficulty) and read the faults
P0011 a camshaft position-over advanced or system performance bank 1
P0301 cylinder 1 misfire detected
Before I pulled the engine to pieces, I had a fault the same or similar to the camshaft fault but thought it was due to the timing chain etc being in poor condition.
I have looked at the connector to the injector and it looks fine
I have swapped the No1 and No2 coils and replaced No1 and No2 plugs with new ones.
It is still the same
I can delete the faults, but they come back again
I cannot get rid of the three amigos and I have the engine warning light.
I still have to fit the right park/flasher light, over the last few days several people have tried to get there hand in and put the plastic nut on, but so far no luck
Spent some time cleaning it and its starting to look good, the weather has been lovely to work in but I have a cold but I am getting there RR 2005 4.4 petrol

Good effort, you are getting there.
There are several things that can cause cam timing faults.
You have the mechanical aspect which is how you set the timing and the trigger wheels when you put it back together but i think if you had the fault before and your spannering ability to get where you are i think the fault was most likely already present.
Simplified, the engine ecu reads the position of the crank and the two cams, the cams each have a sensor that reads the gaps in the trigger wheel you timed when you put the vanos back together and based on other factors such as load and engine rpm etc it decides where to adjust your timing. You only have vanos on your inlet.
Based on the data the ECU gets from the various sensors the vanos solenoids have an electrical current applied to move them in or out to direct oil pressure to act on either side of the vanos units to adjust the cam timing in the desired direction.

it could be the cam sensors that are faulty or dirty, there was a similar case on there a few days ago, the wiring going to them, the vanos solenoid themselves could be blocked or faulty.
Looking at microcat the sensors are the same both sides so you could swap them around and the same for the solenoids to see if the fault swaps sides. The connectors going to the inkectos you say are ok which is good.
The little earth strap is in place for the cam covers, the one by the coil packs ?

Did you rebuild your vanos ?
The icarsoft is ok but not great as a diagnostic tool for these.

Is your petrol fresh ?
if the 3 amigos are the hdc, eas and abs that is probably related to a different non engine fault, is your battery ok and what other faults do you have on your icarsoft ?

i forgot to say the "HDC inactive" comes up on the dash
i haven't taken the injector connectors off to check them but they look like they are snapped on ok
the little earth straps that go to the coil packs are in place
i did rebuild the vanos
i drained the petrol and replaced it last week with the highest grade i could buy, 98 i think
if i am using the icarsoft correctly, there are no other faults
its an other lovely day here 27deg so they say, i wont be going to work, i am not over the cold yet, so i will have a look again RR 2005 4.4 petrol

Not quite 27 degrees here at the moment ..
Multiple electronic warnings could be a weak battery, especially if it has been standing for a while but icarsoft should pick up faults if you are getting warnings on the dash.
With the engine, i would swap over the cam shaft sensors and see if the fault swaps sides and then try the solenoids.

i swapped over the cam shaft sensors, still the same.
i pulled out the right solenoid and had a look at it but to pull out the left one, need to drain the water etc so i gave it a miss, leave it for an other day.
i pulled the wiring harness off the injectors on the right side and put a light on the injector coupling and it worked fine, so now i will have to remove the injectors
the couplings on the injectors came off so easy, i just did it like you said, worked a treat RR 2005 4.4 petrol

Have a search of M62 and the POO11 code, quite a bit of info regarding the code after timing chain and guides, might give you something else to try after solenoids.
