i never did like the look of that kit i bought, i even took it in to BMW and asked them if it looked ok, they said the angles looked ok, a guy on YouTube said the Chinese ones were no good

top timing chain covers, i wasn't happy with ether of them, had to take the left one off and put it back on a gain to get it in line

"I also had the same problem timing a 2002 540iA after doing the timing chain guide rails and it turned out to be the upper timing covers. There is enough play in those covers to allow the cam sensors to be out of place. The covers have to be forced down as far as possible before the bolts are tightened. BMW actually sells plastic spacers (just like the VCG) to install under the valve covers to help force down when tightening the upper timing chain covers. You then remove the spacer and finish your installation of the VCG, etc. I don't think they are necessary as long as you know the covers have to be forced down when tightening the upper covers." RR 2005 4.4 petrol

I think there is screw you can remove from the front upper timing covers which enables you to check the timing against the cam trigger wheel but don’t know if it can be done with the top cam covers on or even if it is correct what I’m saying. I know the screws in question but don’t know the procedure , that is a lot of don’t knows I appreciate .
I’m away today but back tonight so might be able to find out a bit more info later.
I used the Chinese kit but the trigger wheel timing jug had been modified by the previous owner as it was wrong. I also purchased the full GAS kit which is a pleasure to use.

After reading a lot of those posts, I have come to the conclusion that the position of the crank has nothing to do with it.
Providing the vanos is fully anti clockwise when fitted, it is solely the position of the timing plate and the position of the sensor.
The position of the timing plate relies on the tool used to set it up
The position of the sensor relies on getting the top timing chain cover in the right position
What do you think, am I missing some thing RR 2005 4.4 petrol

I think the crankshaft position sensor determines the rpm of the engine, not sure what else it does.
have you got the rave manual system description and operation as there are pages of information detailing every aspect of what the engine is doing and how it adjusts the cam timing and vanos etc?
here is one of the many pages.

i think you are correct in getting the timing cover fitted incorrectly will alter the timing but I am not sure if that is enough to throw a fault but if the timing tools are not correct then that would.

i did look at removing the air filter but didnt think it would help, i will remove it, now you have said that and give it a try RR 2005 4.4 petrol

after removing the air filter housing, i still couldn't get my hand in but with the help a 1/4 socket set it was quite easy RR 2005 4.4 petrol
