The holes are in the sump.

The lower hole presumably goes right through because of the length of the rod and that the rod with its bush must not be pulled out before all swarf has been flushed implying that the swarf would otherwise end-up inside.

I would also expect that the drill bit would take far too much effort to use unless it is only opening-out an existing hole even though drilling in aluminium rather than cast iron.

The instructions state to position a container to collect oil prior to removing the core plugs, although I would expect oii only to emerge from the lower plug as the upper hole drains to the lower hole through the tube through which the swarf is flushed.

Like your thinking, makes sense. Thumbs Up
Maybe safest to try to buy a sump from a breakers and plan it. Cheers, Greg

Studying the top view, I can see what I think to be a vertical gallery:

This does seem to line up with the plugs.

Not sure what the plug is just above the gallery hole...

Quite invaluable to see this.... Cheers, Greg

Just picking this thread up - and a bit of a bump

That sump pictured could be had for around (hopefully under) £300.

Anyone with any engineering experience want to want to come in with me?

Greg

. Cheers, Greg

Just out of interest Greg, Have you checked on the availability of the mod kit ? New pipe, drill jig etc. and the price ??
Add that to your 2nd hand sump and it may be that the indi price is not worth the hassle of a DIY job ?

Good luck guys, Ive done a lot of spanner work in my time but this job outside on a drive with no ramp was a definite no no for me. Having seen the strip down they did at Green Oval I know I made the right decision. BMW i3 Electric Car

I've done a lot of diy on my cars over the years, but decided this would be a step too far. Fortunately the dealer I bought from agreed to pay for the drain mod under warranty and Duckworths Boston carried out the work a couple of weeks ago.

They quoted £1279.20 all in (incl VAT). The kit part of the cost was £261. It took them a full two days even with all the kit in a main dealer workshop, and they even carried out a full four wheel alignment, when the work schedule only calls for the front tracking to be done.

Now it's done no more smoke screens, very pleased.

Just like to give a big Thumbs Up for Redline Specialist Cars in Harrogate who I bought from and their no quibble approach to dealing with warranty issues, IME they are a quality outfit with excellent customer care.

Duckworths Boston have also been very good and I will no doubt use them for service as there don't seem to be many LR specialist independents around South Lincs.

Agree it's a size niner job and I'm not ready to launch in and drill my sump yet...

But I do think there is a way other than the factory instructions which are belt and braces.

You've just got to get oil into the the plug hole. A plumbing job right?

Hence a test on a sump from a breakers being next step without drilling anything on the car (yet).

. Cheers, Greg
