Perhaps the later drain could be used with its bracket bolted to a stepped bracket from under the diff bolt, thereby not needing to attach a bracket to the tube. This would very much simplify the fabrication required.

Edit: This assumes that the turbo is the same as the L405's secondary turbo or at least has the same drain attachment point so that the drain otherwise fits. I can't remember which turbo is different between the 2 vehicles although IIRC the primary turbos are slightly different whereby the L405's fouls the L322's body, as noted in the thread for a new 4.4 being fitted to an L322.

PS. I'd do this mod myself but not drilling and and tapping and hope to get away with only removing the front driveshaft to the diff.

Fantastic Graeme, thanks for your thoughts!

Yes I believe you are correct about 405 turbos fouling from Salter's re-engining project.

Could you pls elaborate on your last sentence? If you did it yourself, you'd not drill....

EDIT: do you mean trying to find a way of securing the later 405 pipe with it's push-fit?

. Cheers, Greg

Sorry, I was referring to the original method which I would not do myself but I shouldn't have made any reference to it.

Yes, I envisage that I would readily make a simple Z bracket to bolt the the L405 bracket, which appears to hang not quite vertical from the push-in fitting.

This is a pic mid-drain mod from another thread I saved.
(can't remember which one, thanks to whoever posted Thumbs Up )

You can see the replaced lower plug.

You can also see the fitting screwed into the newly tapped hole.

To the left - is this the diff bolt you mean Graeme?

Here's another angle before they have taken the blank plugs out:

And here are all three pipes:

Shame the 3rd is facing the opposite direction

Yes, that is the diff bolt. However the original pipe's bracket bolt would be a better option.

Can you do a mirror image of the later pipe to get it pointing in much the same direction as the others?

Flipped, although it's pointing down and not up like the ones on the left:

Although a closer look at the fitting of the - let's call it Mk 1 kit - and I noticed the thread is far inside. The bung surface ID is sealed by the o-ring on the fitting.

So maybe there's no way around drilling?

Page 10 of the TSB says:
Using a suitable drill and a 12mm drill bit, drill through the centre of the drill guide in to the oil pan until the drill bit breaks through the inner wall of the oil pan, (resistance will no longer be felt on the drill once the inner wall has been broken through).

. Cheers, Greg

This TSB is for 2010-2012: https://www.fullfatrr.com/gallery/albums/u...20Smke.pdf

I'm interested to look at the revised version for the early L405 SDV8. Does anyone know how to get TSB's ?

. Cheers, Greg

LTB00524V6 is for the L405 MY13/14 although I don't have an English version. I can look at the pictures though and they're all the same as the L322's.

A Trap

Looking at the later pipe and the one Int the TSB, looks like the block has been modified, the tsb pipe has the o-ring in the same place but then has a long tube with a retaining thread at the end suggesting the oil galleries are different and the tsb item is bridging a gap?

The factory drain's new sump fitting could easily be the same size as the plug whereas the retrofit's long tube is needed to reach past the larger plug diameter. The later sump must have a threaded hole for the retaining bracket to bolt to.

I'm thinking Graeme, looking at the fitting being threaded deep in the hole, that the drilling can't be avoided.

Does that deeper wall in the sump need to be opened to let oil through.

The big question is: if you just removed the plug, is there oil in that gallery?
If not then the drilling is to both let oil through and also to allow you to tap a thread.
(As opposed to just needing a hole in order to cut a thread).

Note the o-ring seal on the outer ring.

. Cheers, Greg

Looking at the 405 pipe it has 2 o ring seals and the mounting bracket looks like it's secured to the bolt hole adjacent to the blanking plug , if so it may well just go straight in if the plug is removed and be held in by the bolt through the bracket , the only unknown is if the oil gallery is directly behind the plug or not .
