Seat back ducting cracked with heat fail...

My back ducting is cracked in the ways that TJ2K's was, cooling works fine, heat setting runs for 10 seconds or so... I've got one quick clarifying question after reading this whole thread:

Does this necessarily mean that I need the new motor assembly in the back, or is a careful repair job likely to help me?

(My cooling works on my base unit, btw.)

Ok, after a pretty thorough repair job to the back ducting and retesting upon reassembly, here’s where I am. Based on what I’ve read here about the seat back being the main source of most issues, I think I’ve got a weird situation:

Full cool: both fans go full-on. Everything cools great.
Full heat: both fans go full-on for a few seconds and cut off completely. Sad
Full heat (with a quick press of the button for back only): Fan in back strangely stays on, but very very slowly runs. After several minutes of it barely running, I never detect any heat happening.
If I then push the button again to reactivate the base with the back, both fans go full-on (including the back fan which speeds way up now), they both run for about 5 seconds and then both cut off completely.

I’ve done this procedure over and over and over, trying different orders of operations, and always this same result.

Please don’t tell me this is an indication that the BASE hardware is also in need of repair! Could this still be that the backrest unit just needs replacing, even though it’s acting a little funny until the base is turned on? I think I’m about to break down and purchase the IID Tool. Anyway to get a discount out there?...

Sorry to say I think both units have gone.

Had exactly the same with mine;

Repaired the split ducting (back unit) reinstalled, cooled but heating cut out quickly. Then soon after the base unit went. Cooling ok.

I don't think a GAP will hep you, but a good tool to have.

Tried LOTS of things (see my post about Mustang experiment) but in the end replaced both back and base with originals.

These units aren't cheap but been warm or cool ever since!

For my trouble, I've got a box of broken ones including the failed Mustang experiment too! Cheers, Greg

Noooooooo!

But, does this mean I need a new bottom cushion and need to redo the ducting through the seat and such, like you did yourself? I guess we're now saying that there's some sort of temperature sensor on the bottom cushion as well as the back rest? I thought, at first, everything indicated that the feedback was only from the back rest? I was hoping that since the bottom cooled fine, that the main cushion system was all good?

Side note: How do you attach photos? I uploaded a before/after of my back rest ducting fix, but it never showed up in this thread?

Again, thank you so much for the quick help. Finding this forum has made my feel SO much better about my ownership of my new-to-me(2012) RR!

You’ll have to check your base ducting.
If collapsed it’s probably cause the unit to die.

The base unit is under the seat frame but the screw holding it in is topside, under the cushion so you’ll have to take it all apart I’m afraid.

There are no sensors outside either unit.

Quite a few people inc myself have tried to get these things repaired without luck. Cheers, Greg

WOW. This is NOT good news. I wonder how much the entire seat bottom would be (including the black leather), because it's certainly showing the wear. My RR only has 65k miles, but there is the typical cracking on the side from getting in and out. Original owner may have been a bit husky. I'm 205, but try to be careful not to put extra wear on it.

As sort of a related point, I'm a little disappointed that none of the 37 ways you can adjust the power seats make you feel held in a little better. I feel like I'm sort of sliding all over the seat and holding the door during turns. Often there's a function on luxury seats that adjusts the sides that sort of hug you more or less. You agree with that?

One more question...

In the event that the seat bottom unit (along with possibly the ductwork and/or cushion) is in need of replacement, would it be a mistake to fit a brand new seat back unit as a first step to see if that may fix the problem? Or am I in danger of blowing a new back unit in the process?

The more I think about that question, the more I think that even if the bottom unit/cushion had a list of issues, a new back unit with new ductwork and such couldn't blow itself unless there was a leak or obstruction associated with that unit...

You can indeed fit a back unit as I did then see what happens.

The units run separately so a new back won't affect what's happening on the base.

I found though, just to manage your expectations, that if the heating cuts out after short while there's really nothing you can do (as far as has been explored here plus research I did) - to fix it.

Perhaps somebody will crack it though - hopefully. The peltier unit inside must only be a £25 part.

Gents,

New to the forum here but figured I'd share my experience as this is the first issue I'm dealing with on my 2011 Supercharged.

Was getting a Mechanical Failure/Leak code on the IID tool for the driver seat (LHD). Pulled the seat back off (very easy once you figure it out but take your time the first time so as to not break anything). Found my seat back duct cracked:

Repaired it with some silicone sealant:

And reinstalled.

Now I can run the heated seat on seat back only and it will run, and run well, indefinitely on any power setting. If I switch on the seat base, it will run for about 30 seconds then the fan speed goes to max for a moment followed by both the seat back and seat base switching off, never to come back on until the vehicle is restarted. This also throws the Mechanical Failure/Leak code again.

I unbolted and tilted back the seat to inspect the seat base unit. Looks like this:

No obvious cracks like on the other one. I also ran it without the filter in place to verify it's not a clogged filter.

On cooling mode, both the seat base and seat back seam to work well.

If there are any thoughts on what else to try, I'd be thrilled to hear them. Otherwise I'm looking at a used seat as it's likely cheaper than replacing both units as I'm sure the seat back silicone fix will only be temporary.

I've got an update on my driver seat as well, now that I have the IID Tool...

When I first scanned the vehicle, I got lots of codes, of course, but only one associated with the seat:

U0140-00 (2Cool Lost communication with body control module.

When I cleared, drove around, tried heated seats (they shortly cut off again), scanned again, I got only one code:

B1232-7A (2F) Left Seat - Mechanical failure - fluid leak or seal failure.


Prior to this, I have removed the back unit and "fixed" the broken duct with electrical tape and zip ties, but... I can't be sure that it's perfectly sealed, I guess? Here's my question/confusion: If it's the issue people have discussed, why have I never gotten any overheat warnings? And, GGDR, you said that the back and base run separately, but I thought that I've read over and over the that back unit was some kind of hub for the system that always ran, and if it went out in any way, the whole system crapped out. Am I misunderstanding here?

I've justified in my head placing an order for the ridiculously priced back unit to get this going again, I'm just wanting to try and make sure that I shouldn't do what carmaniac37 is saying and just be looking for a whole replacement seat.
