JCW is correct, it is very unlikely that the cooler itself hase crac and is leaking. get some competent mekanic get this two gaskets from Duckworth Dan and you are set. if I remember correctly gaskets are 15-20 pounds.

My car lost it's water.Crack in the oil cooler according to dealer foto.Waiting for the quote Hopefully no engine damage,as I stopped soon after "low coolant" message.It was cool(15c) and engine was not to hot.Not a nice feeling.Car on 113k kms. 2012 TDV8 Vogue SE 4.4

Just to confirm I had the gaskets and O ring changed on my L322 about 6/12 months ago and that was it - job done, no more leaks and no damage to the cooler itself - it was actually the gaskets on mine but I did the O ring too because that seemed like the right thing to do.

Have people started to see it on the L405’s yet? - I could change them on my new one (80,000m) as a precautionary measure if they have 2016 (L405) Autobiography in Black with Ivory - for ULEZ

I would leave changing gaskets until a leak is detected in case more suitable gaskets that withstand the heat from the EGR cooler become available unless other sealant will be used. Replacement gaskets are the same part number as the originals so will be the same material and therefore will also leak once they too go hard.

Just read this post this morning - very interesting.

All our cars go to one main dealer - all their lives - and boy I am so glad they do.

LR dealership was tasked to service one of the FF and in the service the tech guy decided to replace the oil cooler ( car had done 140K ) - with no problems at all - it was a routine service.

Cut a long story short - the tech guy did just what you guys must not do - break the unit - still not sure what he did - but he did me a great favor -

Ended up with a BRAND NEW £25,200.00 complete engine with all the ancillaries: Water pump, Starter, Alternator, Fuel Injectors, Belts - everything new

So - ALWAYS GET YOUR FF SERVICED AT THE MAIN DEALER - If things go wrong they hold their hands up and put it right and in my case - A NEW CAR !

So why did LR issue the TSB for the oil cooler gasket, make the gasket available as a spare part and add the procedure to the WSM? It seems to me that someone at the dealership stuffed-up causing the engine to be damaged so had to fix it. The task is a simple one but requires that the oil is not contaminated in the process.

All I know is that - some things are simple for Mortal Man to do and some things are just left for Gods to do !

and from what I know even I would not touch this - If a trained LR technician got this wrong and he did - that means Its a very serious piece of kit to F U - period !

Just want all you guys to know - Things can go very bad indeed - Better to know that not !

Maybe an apprentice didn't appreciate the care that an open, post-filter oil-way requires. Even the task of replacing an inlet manifold where the camshafts are exposed doesn't require the same care because the oil is pre-filter with only the oil pump exposed to damage.

I would love to know what the guy did in order to lunch the engine.
Maybe he stuffed some paper in the oil galleries to stop debris getting in, and forgot to remove it ?

I appreciate this mechanic did something that cost an engine, but that is no different to doing an oil change: Forget to tighten the sump plug and it can be game over. Same for so many other simple jobs. That doesn't mean we should all stop doing it though, does it ?
A mate of mine who is a mechanic forgot to tighten the sump plug on a car when he was an apprentice which then needed a new engine. He got sacked on the spot.

Fair play to the dealer for replacing the full engine though, bit of a result for you  Too many toys, not enough time

2011 4.4 TDV8 AB Black

one of the guys i work with told me about the indy he uses, dropped in, as soon as i mentioned what i had been told, he laughed, popped the bonnet, took a look and said 1.5 hours and gaskets, end of. Booked in on first available slot.

Won't be using or recommending the first guys i went to. He claims to be a level 11 tech from LR.

Just received update from JLR workshop!!!!Bad news,it is the EGR cooler that cracked,not the oil cooler and the repair cost is much higher and that component is not covered by my extended policy  2012 TDV8 Vogue SE 4.4
