My 6th Gen ULF worked perfectly with my iPhone 3GS including accessing the contacts list BUT you do not get caller ID on the nav screen with any iPhone. I use to with all my previous phones and even use to have sms messages with some Nokia models (pre-smart phones).

I am not aware of the extra voice commands but my reason for a 13th Gen upgrade was that this is the ONLY ULF that does display the callers number and name (if in your phone book) on the Nav monitor when paired with an iPhone. Cool I can confirm a 13th Gen works perfectly with a 3GS and iPhone 4 Thumbs Up 22MY Defender 110 D250 HSE X Dynamic, Gondwana Stone.

As of Gen 8 pairing works relatively well with iPhones. The phone book seemed to work OK too on the one I tried (Gen 8, 3GS). I'd still spring for a Gen 13 tho, before dropping (only) GBP100 less. And the Gen (and up seem to go for around GBP 200+.

Many Thanks for the replies. I got busy over the weekend and repinned my loom. I had the opportunity to test my work with a 5th Gen ULF; and the good news is that it all worked!

The only thing(s) that I didn't manage to fathom out was the phonebook.

My entries all appeared as:- John (Work)
John (Home)
John (Mobile)

Is this to be expected with a 5th Gen, and is it sorted with the 13th Gen?

I also asked to voice system to "Read Phonebook", the reply was a somewhat startling "Phonebook Empty", even though the entries could be read on the screen. Did I miss something?

For information the phone I used was an iPhone 3gs with IOS 4.2.1

Phone book seems to be OK - that's the way mine is too - 3 Johns for 3 numbers (that's what she said Laughing ). There is no other way for the numbers to be displayed as there is no 'sub-level-menu' for the phone book (as in top-level 'John', sub-level 'home/work/mobile').

The 'oral' phone book is actually a separate phone book within the ULF - not within your cell phone - with your own spoken entries which you have to enter under the menu item 'add to phone book' (or a similar command - mine is actually in German Cool ). That way, if you come from Boston, Mass., the ULF can understand you when you say 'Jahhn, Wohhk' (or if you're a Kraut and say 'Dschon, Werk' Razz ) because it's your own entry.

Good to hear it's all working well. Do you have a list of all the voice commands?

Many Thanks for the update.

I have downloaded a manual from here :-http://www.e38.org/BMW-03_00-Voice-Control-en.pdf

It seems to list everything we need.

Spliced the new loom into the existing wires at the SES plug and I now have a very clear working original car kit. It is very clear now with the new uprated Mic. Thanks for the help all. "On first name terms with my local Dealer......now."

Think I'm down to the last little niggle bit - everything works so far (voice dial, all the steering wheel buttons etc) except.....when I hang up the call using the button on the central display it stops the call through the speakers but does not hang up the call on the iphone.

I am currently having to hang up on the handset - which is not ideal. Anyone else with an iPhone4 and Gen13 ULF have this issue? anyone have an idea why its doing this? should I re-pair it and see what that does? "On first name terms with my local Dealer......now."
