A reluctant expert, not by choice. Love the 4.4 it's a Titan but nobody told me about DPFs being incompatible with city living.. Cheers, Greg

I live in Bishops Stortford so suburban but the car certainly doesn’t do the 50mph busts very often but I reckon I get a yellow DPF light once a year`maybe three times in 2 years and it takes 4/5 mins to clear at 50mph.

A new owner of 4.4 TDV8, Ant89, just posted this:
(Happy to report I'm still over the moon with the car and totally amazed at the economy given its size, weight and aerodynamics.

Had the car remapped at a very highly recommended custom tuner local to me and the performance is absolutely incredible - it just pulls and pulls. Spoke about my concerns regarding the torque and how the car is already close to the limit but he assured me he'd mapped the car so the torque only hits 800nm at slightly higher RPM and not so much from a standstill. Had the EGR and DPF mapped out too so hopefully no issues forthcoming from either of those.

I can see what people mean now - I can't see myself changing this car unless it's for an L405.)

I, for one, would like to get EGR and DPF mapped like that.

Nino

I've been holding off replying to this as dpf's caused me a lot of headaches / nightmares a few years back and are the reason I own a 2005 non DPF FFRR and not newer.

In 2010 I bought a 4 year old bmw 530d m sport from an ex lease disposal company.

Very nice car but after a short while I noticed an exhaust smell from under the bonnet. Investigated and discovered a rubber pipe had popped off a sensor and this is where the smell was coming from.

Secured the pipe back into place and then shortly after I got a 'DPF full' warning message flagging up. Turns out that this sensor was a back pressure sensor for the DPF.

Tried all the usual to get it to regen but no joy so it got booked into a bmw specialist to try a forced regen. This didn't work and several other garages tried but with no joy.

I was literally doing thousands of miles a week in the car at the time and not once did it go into limphome though...

I contacted bmw who told me that the DPF was a serviceable item , just like an oil filter apparently, and when it fails you just need to replace it at a monumental amount of money! At this point I started looking at other options although there wasn't many at the time.

Eventually I contacted a company in Scotland called ecotune. They sold me a DPF bypass pipe and a handheld obd programmer in order to map the DPF out and also remap the car for performance at the same time. This worked out about half the price of a new DPF and as I was planning on mapping the car anyway it was a win win situation or so I thought....

My mate fitted the bypass pipe at his garage and it was an absolute nightmare as the front subframe had to be dropped. I then remapped the car after I had downloaded the remap from ecotune and we started it up. DPF Waring light had gone but the car had a steady flow of blue smoke on tick over which disappeared when driving but reappeared every time the car was left ticking over for 30 seconds or so.

Ecotune tried tweeking the map for weeks and we must have remapped the car 30+ times before I gave up and sent the original DPF off to be cleaned (not many companies did this 8 years ago)

DPF back on, original map flashed back onto the ecu and hey presto, no more blue smoke on idle and no DPF light....for about a week.

At this point we tried everything to try and get it to regen. Replaced the back pressure sensor and pipework, sensors on the DPF, glow plugs everything but nothing worked. Bmw were convinced that if I replaced the DPF at £1800+ then everything would be ok but what if that one blocked as well...?

Eventually I'm sad to say that I gave up. I took the car to a local diesel specialist who had just bought a new machine which allowed them to clean the DPF in situ by removing the sensor on the DPF and pumping a cleaning agent through there. Another £300 lighter and I just went and traded the car in (and lost a monumental amount of money) as I had decided at that point that I was never going to win. I'd had the car for 18 months and spent most of that time battling with the DPF.

I spoke to a friend a few years after it had gone, He had pals that worked at bmw and they had told him that if a car came in with DPF issues that they replaced the turbo and DPF as one unit now as they had discovered that it was the turbos passing oil on tick over which was blocking the DPF' s.....

The DPF was clearly just hiding the blue smoke but at the same time it was being blocked by the oil passing through the turbo. Strangely enough that car used to use quite a bit of oil although I was told this was completely normal, obviously it wasn't and a replacement turbo would have probably cured the DPF issue but who knows.

wow, what a read. Sorry to say I glazed over part way through the workshop manual post Embarassed Mr. Green
So a question regarding the additional fuel required during regen.
My drive to work is roughly 20 miles of country-ish lanes (A and B roads) that takes 40 minutes. Speed is mostly in the 40 to 60 range, apart from the junctions.
Usually my mpg for this is around 28mpg, but every now and then it is closer to 20mpg.
I wonder if this is the result of the regen taking place.
Is there any outward signs or logged data of when a regen has occurred ?
I am hoping my drive means I wont fall foul of this. Maybe I should check the figures you have mentioned.

Hi John, didn't see your question until now.....

Your drive sounds fine, it's 20-30mph speeds that are bad news for DPF's. We went down from central London to Biggin Hill yesterday for the airshow ( Thumbs Up ) and it's 90% 20mph the whole way, or at least the route we took trhrough Crystal Palace. My soot level increased several grams going there and back, the slow speeds just fill the thing up. Hoping to resolve mine soon, a new EGR sensor from Duckworths arrived Friday plus the special tool. Anyway, your commute sounds fine. You can set up your IID to show the readings I've got and when you see the EGTs go up above 400 and onto 600+ you know the burn is happening. There are no other signs really. A professional tool may be able to show a log. Or the IID - but I don't know how to view any logs on the IID. Your MPG might be a giveaway, next burn I do, I'll monitor. It feeds in extra fuel on the exhaust stroke to raise the temps.

. Cheers, Greg

United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Supercharged 5.0 SC V8 Stornoway Grey

One of the reasons I did plump for the 5.0 S/C, having read so much about DPF pain across a variety of vehicles with town driving. No doubt my timing chain tensioner/guides will let go now instead Smile.

But if you do just drive the 5.0 S/C around town, 10-12mpg constantly would be very depressing - I at least like to see some high teens occasionally, and preferably some early twenties!

Interesting to see Greg's detail about completely removing and cleaning the DPF though, I hadn't realised that was possible at a vaguely reasonable cost.
