Excellent job. I follow that…. And agree it’s not for novices…. Though you could always get a second hand unit and upgrade the maps on that… before you touch your own car…..

Do we know what the FireWire connection is actually supposed to be used for?

Sure, dealer upgrade. Didn't someone in this thread already write that they visited the dealer just for kicks, and they actually have to rent a device (at cost), then buy the map update (at cost) then load the map into you car, charging you for their costs plus labour plus profit. That is why the cost differs between dealers. And the maps provided by the dealer is not updated to 2017/2018 levels. I have yet to try the claimed Toyota Prius maps which supposedly are even updated to 2020/2021. Will research that a bit more.

Honestly don't know if the maps can be used, simply because I haven't tried. I am 99% sure the firmware from WinCE will not work as none of the threads I've read on the MMM2 system state that it is WinCE based. Also, the firmware seems vendor specific as the Volvo firmware on the DVDs must be replaced by Land Rover's version.

Out of courtesy, here is the Volvo map download portal : https://www.volvocars.com/uk/support/downloads/maps
As far as I can conclude its the RTI 2008 maps distributed on DVD that are a 100% match with the FFRR 2010-2012 system.

And a bonus treat: I've already concluded without a doubt that the Sensus 2011 download is 100% identical with the USB based update for LR4/Discovery 4 USB updateable nav systems used in model year 2014 (don't know the full MY range of that system) bar the LOADING.KWI file which must be replaced with the one from LR. Oh, and there are three files with zz0 and zz1 extensions that needs to be concatenated together before being used, and the resultant file given the KWI extension. I've yet to take out the drive and manually update it as again, the drive will be password locked. A topic for another forum Wink
I did test those maps in my FFRR and no, they are of a different format and made the nav computer reboot constantly.

Ive actually brought a new hdd to fit into my nav unit, so if I can download the files, put them onto the new hdd, then strip my dash out, and swap the old hard drive for the new one, do you think this would work?

Also, how long does it take to strip the top of the dash off? as I need to use my car every day and would have to plan this in advance.

Manyu thanks

If the new HDD has ATA Security it might work, is it the exact same model as the one in the nav unit, or what is the model number of the drive? I could look up in the spec sheets if it even supports the needed disk security.
Re the time to strip the dash. I used about 2hrs but I took pictures along the way. You need to unplug negative from the battery as you will be disconnecting a live airbag. You can use the car if you push back the nav computer into its seating area, plug back the cable to the centre loudspeaker, screw back the leftmost and rightmost screws holding the upper dash in place, and screw back the drivers side ventilation housing (because you need the light switch to be operational).

Good news is that the drive according to the online spec sheet I found here: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/540144/S...=21#manual does indeed support ATA Security. The potential bad news is that the environmental parameters of this drive is nowhere as good as the Hitachi Endurostar drive already in the navcomputer, for example operating in cold weather or sustaining shocks when you're driving. See here more on why Hitachi claims these drives are built like a tank https://www.asipartner.com/marketing/surve..._N4K50.pdf
I think it will work, I just don't know how long. Personally, I would try and get another Endurostar if the purpose is to switch out the HDD.

Might just try it to see if it'll work.

Well they are available in bulk from China Smile https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32823219136.html
If somebody does get out their nav HDD I'd love to get a sector image of one to analyze further differences between regions, and possibly work out what it takes to load a map onto a car where the original license files are gone, like from after a HDD failure.

I'm keen to go down this path but not for a couple of months and providing that I can get hold of a computer with IDE support and can get late enough maps for my part of the world to be worthwhile.

Just to throw a hat in the ring -- I have a 'spare' head unit complete with drive (obviously)

I don't fancy taking my unit out of the car, as I have NaviPlus installed -- but happy to work with someone who wants to give this a go. Current: 2011 FFRR Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Do you know if a USB to IDE adapter doesn't work to remove the master PW?
