Just another thought..is it possible a dodgy starter motor would effect the ignition sequence? Likely the starter motor has died....sorry I'm lost so any assistance would be great. |

Im far from an expert but smoke could be a burnt cable more thannthe starter motor. Hopefully one of the experts on here will chime in shortly. 2015 4.4 AB

It sounds to me like your starter motor has possibly got stuck engaged, and has burnt itself out, or the contacts on the solenoid.

I was wondering if it could be your alternator. They have a habit on Discos of burning out and taking the battery with them when they go.

Right thanks everyone I have something to work with, at the weekend my first thing will be to remove and test the starter motor (just wishing my arms were another two foot longer...looks a pig)

Cheap and easy to charge the battery - should really be over 12V, ideally 12.3V+ with engine off and car asleep. See if charging it makes any difference.
