Issue with Deployable Side Steps

Hello everyone,

I have a strange issue with my driver side electric fold down side step.

The step folds down as normal when i unlock or open the door, then when i get in and close the door it folds up, but then comes straight back down and stays down. When I drive 100 yards it eventually folds up.

If someone lightly holds the step up when it has folded up it stays up.

I have tried greasing the joints.

Anyone any ideas before i start replacing motors etc and potentially wasting money over a simple fix?

As always all help greatly appreciated.

There's not much I dont know about the 322

something you do not mention - when you close the door - Have you any interior lights on ? - so the car thinks A Doors/Boot is still open

can you confirm ?

The step would redeploy if it sensed an obstruction so maybe a position sensor is FUBAR or there is an obstruction preventing it reaching its "park" position? Bish.

One thing I would check on is that BOTH Wedge Keys are in the correct position - WITH The Wedge Key bolt secure.

It is worth noting: That the Wedge keys can and will wear ( they are made of a fairly soft metal ) and if they are not greased on a regular basis they will wear.

another thing - have you taken the motor unit off recently ?

If you have ensure you RESET the unit with the car:

DE-ACTIVATING is done by: Ignition key to position 2 - then pressing the Side Step button for 5 seconds.

ACTIVATING The Power Side Steps - key to position 2 - then pressing the Side Step button for 5 seconds.

The Over-Ride Power Step button is mounted in the headliner opposite to the Sun Roof open close button.


I would think at this stage is the Wedge Key - I did see some LR Wedge Keys on Ebay last month - they come up from time to time for sale.

bringing this back to life - I have a step problem

Hi there

I have a step that is making a grinding noise on my 2008 RR and the image in this post is no longer accessible - where and how can I check the wedge alignment?

Follow up question is the wedge on the motor or the step assembly if I have to change?

I too have this exact same problem. I have tried lubricating with everything I can see with wd40 but not sure if it's helping. The problem was intermittent but becoming more frequent.

I can't see any images on this thread - would someone be able to share any instructions again re the wedge key please?

WD40 isn't a lubricant! I use a silicone lubricant on mine. 2010 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

Wd40 is in fact a lubricant and penetrating oil. But I take your point and will try some silicone lubricant, if that's worked for you. Thanks!

Technically, WD40 seem to also do a silicone lubricant...

yeah they do quite a bit now.

we use GT85, its part of the same company but it smells nicer and seem to work better as well..

I was on about WD40 range been quite big..

i will probably have a big issues with my steps when i next power them up.....

they havent moved in 10 months and they have been deployed the whole time..

but i use GT85 on them usually...

they will be due a strip of car and complete strip down once i have finished the engine rebuild.
