Battery Check ?

Well, it had to happen some time!

First cold snap of the year night before last (although only down to -6) and yesterday evening the Westie wouldn't start. Unlike other cars I have had, I presume the clever fattie doesn't even try to start if it thinks there isn't enough juice in the battery. Hence everything else seemed to be working.

Didn't get a chance to investigate until this morning but when I went out it started first time.......go figure!!

Battery now on the CTEK for the day but how do i check whether the battery is on its way out? It was new when i had the Westie 2.5 yrs ago (LR Exide one)

Rob
Could it be the battery failing?

I had some problems with funny faults coming up and a non-start or two. Booked it into Halfords (wash my mouth out) for their free check and they said battery not good from their tester. Long story short, took it back to dealer who fitted a new battery, original only just over 12 months old, fitted when we bought the car and failing. Not bad service as car not on extended warranty but battery warranty honoured.

Seems so far FFaultless. Cheers
Richard

If the battery is fairly flat, but when you hook it up to a charger it doesn't take much amps, then its knackered. I have a desulphating machine, and to be honest, when a battery is gone, its only a short term remedy.

A problem is most of the modern chargers are plug and go, with an led light to say its charging, but doesn't say how much, and without an ammeter.
If its flat, the ammeter should be showing 5-8 or more amps, if its flat and its only taking 2 or 3 then its gone.

Sadly with the cost of raw materials and everything being built down to a price, batteries, even branded names just don't last any more.

On the flip side, you could argue, by a cheap one and replace it every couple of years, and you will probably be better off.

Best wishes

if it's a westminster then i think it will be an AGM battery so you will need an AGM (=expensive) replacement. charge properly

according to other threads on here, you can fit a 'normal' battery if you tell the computer via IID tool.

hopefully someone more knowledgable that I will come along and clarify

Ah Batteries!

Can't help with the test -- short of putting it on a battery tester -- but to clarify, you *should* have an AGM battery -- when they are changed the car needs to be 'told' typically IID can do this.

I'm trying (by default, stupidity, or simply lack of knowledge) a 'normal' non AGM battery in my 4.4 TDV8, I can confirm that only an 019 battery will fit and not an 020 that 'can' be fitted to earlier models.

Hope some of the helps Current: 2011 FFRR Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Fitted new one on mine a short while ago and no problems since.
Also has stopped an array of minor faults being logged in the engine management module which must have been related to low battery.
Most frustrating thing was I had been let down a number of times since leaving the car standing for periods of over a week but on each occasion RAC connected jump leads and let the battery charge then tested and each time couldn't definitely confirm there was anything wrong with the battery but were able to confirm the battery drain when stood wasn't excessive.
My battery was JLR / Varta branded so I'm guessing was original so if that was the case I suppose is pretty good for a 2011!
Replaced as per recommendation from Baltic Blue (Mike) - see thread. Some other helpful info on the thread also.
Regards
Paul
