Diesel virgin

Having recently come over to the dark side I have questions.... I'm reading all I can on here but can't find much about how a regen works...

Driving at a constant speed over 50mph seems to be the common knowledge BUT....

How long after sitting constant over 50 does it decide to do one?
If it starts, does it stop if the speed changes?
How "steady" does the speed have to be?
How long does it take to do a regen?
Do you "know" when it is doing a regen?
How often does it want to do one? (I appreciate this is a length of string question...!)
Am I asking too many stupid questions?

Any other pearls of wisdom appreciated, I hate driving a car when I don't know how it works.....

This is the only bit on a diesel I understand

Cheers Pete

I've had mine for 2 years Pete and still don't understand all of your questions!!
Only once have I had the yellow warning come up on the dash that it was doing one, I was towing my caravan at the time and the warning went off after about 5mins as I was doing 60mph down a dual carriage way.
A lot of members seem to monitor theirs on the IID tool but that's to techie for me. I just let it get on with it. Thumbs Up

Obviously many on here are more technically able than me but the diesel Range Rovers I have had (two) do mainly short journeys and I've never encountered any DPF issues. Obviously I've been filled with FUD about the whole thing but it has been a none event for me. I do a decent journey about once a month. Geoff

Pete,
You really need to get an iid to see how the regen process works and answer your questions, but I will start you off on your quest.

By monitoring the soot level in live values and the exhaust temperatures all will become much clearer.

Active regens are triggered when the soot level reaches 19.2g on mine providing the following conditions are met,

1) you have a minimum of a quarter tank of fuel.
2) you are holding a pretty steady 50/ 55 mph speed.

The exhaust temperatures will typically be 250 275 C, then suddenly start to rise into the 500 to 650 degrees C range as the fuel burns to complete the regen which can take 10 minutes from start to finish.

Passive regens occur all the time at much lower temperatures and can only be seen by monitoring the soot level on motorway journeys etc.

I could add pictures of screenshots if you want and also talk you through forced regens but you could search out my post detailing the work I did with Pat from Gap to test it when he updated the iid.

Cheers

Thanks for the info Kevin, Geoff and Mike, an IID is on it's way as we speak...

I'll have a play when it arrives and in the meantime I'll find Mikes thread... Thumbs Up Pete

I just traded my 4.4L engine for the 3.00 litre diesel.

The regen seems to be different

This was in the ihandbook . Seems the speeds required to regen are now much lower. I’m not a techie so stand to be corrected.

Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc

Had mine 3 years now Pete and no warnings so far, (hope I don’t regret saying that). I do short journeys to work, circa 6 miles each way on 30 MPH roads. I try and give it a good run at the weekend including faster roads, IE the local bypass where possible.

How long after sitting constant over 50 does it decide to do one? The ECU decides when to regen, typically at or after circa 17 grams of soot measured, Done by how much pressure is measured in the system.

If it starts, does it stop if the speed changes? Yes if you go too slow or stop it will drop out then go back in as you increase speed again.

How "steady" does the speed have to be? I’ve found anything over about 40 MPH works on mine.

How long does it take to do a regen? Between 10 and 20 mins. Depending on speed.

Do you "know" when it is doing a regen? It’s difficult to tell without the IID connected or similar. Once you get used to it you can put your trip into instant consumption and notice a change when it regents, IE it uses more fuel and is slower to react, or mine is as at least.

How often does it want to do one? (I appreciate this is a length of string question...!) Depends on your driving style, I would say anywhere between 100 and 300 miles, maybe even more frequent with the short journeys.

On longer journeys the passive regen helps as it constantly burns off as you drive reducing the amount of active regens required

Am I asking too many stupid questions? Never too many questions Pete Thumbs Up

Here you go Pete, but I stress this is really only to be used as a last resort to clear the RED DPF full visit dealer alarm, certainly not as a regular way of cleaning the DPF.

Under normal driving conditions, ie not frequent very short stop start types of journeys. you will probably never see even an Amber warning.
Mike.

If you have bought a second hand iid it will probably require updating to the latest build level to get this facility.

Yeah, the soot will burn off naturally if it gets warm enough regularly. It’s all about the temperature of the exhaust.
