I'm seriously thinking of getting a 4.4 TDV8 at the moment for my own car, so much car for the money, from what I know they're not prone to turbos blowing and less likely to suffer gearbox issues than the earlier 3.6 with the 6 speed box?.

Aside of oil leaks in places, alternators and starter going at around 80k, the 4.4TDV8 with the ZF8HP is a really amazing powertrain. It's reliable, has immense torque and gets incredible economy.

When the L322 came out, I really don't think anyone could imagine the numbers from this engine. 700nm and 38mpg. It was just not possible only a few years prior. I mean 2.5 tonnes and 38mpg? It's sipping fuel. Which means emissions per mile are also extremely low.

Then Euro 6 comes along so they add AdBlue and it gets even cleaner.
Surely moveing this engine to holy grail status.

But tech and trends moving fast, and people are swiftly moving to buy hybrid and all-electrics.

I realised combustion based engines were dead when I first rode in a Tesla few years back. It was a taxi out of Schiphol. I asked the driver what's it like. So he booted it. And while the road signs started to blur as the speed increased, I watched the range hold steady at well over 300km remaining.

Against this, values of diesels seem to be in nose dive as a result. Ibb you said the other day you are not touching any diesels in the trade now. Wow. I mean wow.

Despite Ford's achievement with the 4.4TDV8, what's staggering is how quickly the favourite kid became shunned.

Making a late L322 4.4TDV8 the absolute car bargain of the decade.

I agree with you it’s a great value car, it’s not that I won’t touch diesels at all but do tend to avoid them unless they’re very good value, as we don’t do much of the later stuff which is Euro 6 (more everyday stuff between 1 and 5k) and petrol cars seem to be flying out whereas the last diesel I got we were stuck with for over 2 months, and it was reasonably priced and a decent car too!.

I also agree with you about EVs, I was fortunate enough to drive someones Model S P100D for half an hour or so last year and was hugely impressed with it, so much so that when they’ve been out a while and a bit more affordable I’d like a Model 3 myself-the S is just too expensive.

The dealer on eBay referenced above allows winning bidders to walk away if not happy ... so lots come up again .
it’s basically a trade outlet that attracts a lot of regular buyers that don’t really get it . Little is tested on the cars they have for sale , they just flip them or take them to the auction ..
There can be bargains to be had ... but you need to know what you’re looking for and be confident in your appraisal of repair costs 4.4 AdBlu Tractor

Listing doesn’t mention so very much buyer beware.

Surely £6 trade would put it at around £8.5k retail?

Not sure I would want to buy a 9 year old RR with 136k on it and only have £2500 in it to sort any niggles, advertise it, put warranty on it.

That is the issue, as they get cheaper they are also getting older and with higher miles, which means they are becoming far more of a risk expense wise.

Why are you getting rid of it? What is wrong with it?
That is the problem, that is what most dealers or buyers are thinking and they need a buffer to sort out some potential big bills. Porsche 911 (996)

This is true.
The guys were easy to deal with, no pressure sales at all, walk away if I wanted to at no cost,
and I would do it again.

But.... I did know that there were obviously going to be mechanical issues to deal with to bring such a cheap well under 5k FFRR back to life.

I knew that I would be replacing pretty much the whole of the suspension components front/rear and the braking system, discs, pads, all pipes, flexibles, EPB shoes, EPB cables, full service inc G/Box, new 020 battery etc etc.

I've got my son in laws 2 poster booked again for Tuesday morning so that I can change out the Air suspension reservoir for a genuine LR new one. The existing one is more rust than steel. (grrr UK road salt).

Buying in this way is not for everyone, I'm fortunate in that I have ready access to a family owned commercial garage and all kit/tools plus the mechanics if I need a hand.

I'm about £1400 in parts, plus my own labour, so I'm still in front IMHO and I know that everything below the doors is now brand new. Very Happy

They’ve got a couple of 2011 models listed currently I was tempted to take a punt on one

Have been looking for a discovery 4 for a while but the crank horror stories have won and put me off, I think, for good. I’m not adverse to giving cars TLC but balk at a £8k bill for an £10k car. My thinking is that whilst they’re not cheap cars to run most of the problems arent catastrophic, more death by a thousand cuts rather than a stab to the heart.

I’ve had an eye on the ones on sale here for a while and while they generally seem to be lower mileage, and often seem in good nick, they don’t seem to offer the value of these and others going through the auctions. It certainly feels that the Discoveries and FFRR have had a big slump. Mild winter? High road tax? Mechanical horror stories? Fuel prices? Diesels being the devil, they’re all having an effect and even though I really want one, and had LRs in the past, I find myself talking myself out of doing it again regularly.
