Kooky does yours have cvd damping?

If I put 21s on mine it would ride like a brick

Yes it does have cvd - which is why I'm surprised that the cornering isn't better. The ride itself is great though. 2010 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

The few times I have come in to a bend too fast on a windy country road I cant say I've noticed the suspension doing anything to help stop the car from falling over.

So I am struggling to see any benefit to this CVD system. Poor ride on my car compared to non CVD and no improvement in corners.

How did this system pass any quality control tests? Did LR engineers not drive cars fitted with this system and compare the benefits (or lack of) compared to standard suspension?

The ride on mine is far better than my previous D4 was on 255/55R19 even after new genuine LR shocks had just been fitted to the D4. I got sick of shock valving compromises after several different sets trying to get a smooth ride over varying surfaces so changed to a L322 with CVDs. I'm constantly astounded as to how smooth the L322's ride is at 100 kph on the local secondary roads around here. My only reservation is their high replacement cost but I won't ever go back to standard shocks if I can avoid it. But as I stated earlier, my tyres are 275/55R20 with more sidewall than 255/50R20 although with a higher load index countering to some extent the softer ride of taller sidewalls.

I think some of the difference in our experiences Graeme will be down to where we live.

I live in a small town which is situated 8 miles from Stockport but 8 miles the other way and I'm in Derbyshire.

The majority of my drives take me towards Stockport which is 8 miles over a mix of potholed B roads with speeds rarely exceeding 30 mph.

If I head towards Derbyshire I very quickly find myself on 60 mph + A roads which are a bit better.

Just to let you know the Terrain Response system needs the CV dampers connected

Oh - not sure.

I know when you get a break in the cable which everyone does, Terrain Response won’t work.
Because it changes the damping rates according to mode/surface.

Craig’s earlier suggestion would answer your question.
It is only a couple of minutes job to unplug the front dampers, but not sure about the rears.

Sadly I cannot yet disable adaptive dynamics in the CCF to test as I do not have an IID tool.

(I would be purchasing one specifically for this job)

I have a cloned SDD but I wouldn't trust it to make CCF changes.

I'd have to take the risk.

Did your 09 have 20" rims and does your friend's 07 have 20" rims? Even if they were both 20" the difference in ride of different tyre brands can be significant.

I suggest that you swap rims with your friend for a test. I didn't like the ride of the 255/50R20 on mine when I first got it so fitted the 19" rims from my previous D4 until I bought 275/55R20. Even though the 275s were LT the ride was much better than the 255/50 and better than the 19" too. I still have 275/55R20 but in Pirelli AT+ which are passenger, not LT so the ride is better again even though their load index is 113.
Hi GraemeS. Is your speedo way out with the 275/55/20?

You haven't seen my rutted 2km farm driveway and 4 km rough gravel lane out to the sealed road! However I raise the suspension 30mm for this section using my height controller to prevent the front suspension from hitting the bump-stops, which is not good for the body, neither mine nor the car.

My speedo with the 275/55s understates by no more than 1 kph at 100 kph.

Fair enough Graeme. I've been considering putting 275 45 20's on which works out -7mm diameter. 275 55 20's are +47mm and would have expected more speedo error than that. Thanks.

I'm running 275/45r20 on my L322 5.0 S/C, and I reckon the speedo over reads by a couple of mph.

If the dash says 32mph when I go past one of those magic signs that tells you your speed, they reckon I'm doing 29 or 30 mph.

Thanks Paul. Perhaps I should have started another thread. I don't understand why tyre sites recommend 275/40/20 as a suitable replacement when it is clearly to small a diameter.

Mine was harsh & felt like the wheels ripped off if you hit a bump.

Not sure if it isn't just my imagination but I've done a hard reset recently & felt like it has been a lot smoother ride since I've done it.

Sure someone mentioned previously (possibly Craig?) in a post about it & the suspension learning its settings again with how you drive.
