Gearbox fluid change

Had mine on the ramp today doing some minor mods and got me thinking I’d do a gearbox fluid change in the next few weeks. Although it hasn’t reached 78k yet I thought it better late than never. I assumed the l405 is the same procedure as the l322 so didn’t think to much into it. To my surprise I went on Facebook when I got home and there was a post on the owners club someone asking about it and someone replied they’d been quoted £900!! I’m guessing there must be something totally different than the l322?

Can’t see how it can be much different than the 322.

I’ve heard of quotes of that amount for the 322 years back. It’s the same gearbox give or take. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

That’s what I thought. I know the filter was part of the pan at first on the 322’s and this may be the costly part for the l405 as I’m sure they’ve changed the design purposely. But £900 !! Watch this space Thumbs Up

The transmission fluid cooling must add a lot of oil ?

I should imagine it’s still very much the same as the l322, discovery. They had coolers as well didn’t they? Well the discovery definitely did.

If you are doing this yourself you need the sump which includes the filter and the oil in the link below , its a 2 stage fill operation in that after the first fill you need to get it up to circa 50 deg c and then refill . Its messy even with a good pump for the oil . Some dealers were flushing the older 6sp box with new fluid but I am not sure you can do that with the 8sp box ?

Much appreciated Charlie. So it’s pretty much the same process as doing the l322. I was under the impression that the gearbox flush process was a waste of money with the full fats due to the fact you can get the pan off and change the filter whereas on the discovery this is not possible without doing the jag pan and oil pick up conversion.

It looks pretty much the same as the ZF 6 speed in the L322 from what I can see, even if it is the 8 speed. From the dwg it seems to have the same oil to coolant heat exchanger (that failed a lot on the early models including my 2006 4.2 SC). So the volume of ZF Lifeguard should be pretty much the same.

Have you tried Duckworth, one of our sponsors for a service kit, OEM ?? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

I also wanted to change my transmission oil and main dealer quoted £1055 !! Issue at main dealer was the labour rate, asked an LR independent who could do it for @£650 using same original LR parts as dealer, so £400 less. I have 60k on my car now , but I was told LR recommend changing this oil at 150k (or also at 7yrs aka life of car as well I think) , but independent says ZF reckon it should be changed long before this at around 75k if I remember. I had the same issue with my L322, LR said oil was good for well over 100k but it all burnt up at 90k and the torque converter failed (which is apparently common for the X5 3.0 diesel engine at this mileage point), so I ended up with a gearbox rebuild. Once done, I realised how 'lazy' the gearbox had got prior to the failure and subsequently, the auto gearchanges were seamless again. I'm starting to feel the same delays in my L405 with the 8 speed, so am going to change the oil 90k earlier than LR recommend, to prevent me having issues further down the line hopefully Smile Steve

The 405 'learns" from your normal driving style, so may e.g. hold gears longer if you drive gently for an extended period, e.g. in winter due to Goodyear Duratrac tyres in my case. One has to 'wake it up a bit' when the summer tyres are back on. There is also a software update for the gear change (my car had this at the last service) as it was thudding on downshifts due to power having built before the gear was in. I agree with the concept of changing the fluids earlier than the LR schedule, but these factors might perhaps also be relevant if your gear change is a bit slow. Only Range Rovers since 1988

That diagram BB put up looks much like the 8sp on the 4.4 L322. Seems to have a similar thermostatic valve and the cooler looks the same as on my 4.4. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Please what are the LR mileage/timescales recommendations for changing gearbox oil /

LR say sealed for life. Utter Censored .
ZF recommend every 60-70K IIRC. Did mine at 80K via a Megaflush machine. 100% replacement. No issues before, no issues after. That's the aim = preventative maintenance. Filter not changed. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"
New Defender D300 90 on order so "Rory" will be going to a new home....!
