I assume it must be after this then Mike. Joe refers to the later 3.0 engines with tabbed bearings in this thread... https://www.disco4.com/forum/question-ovalautos-178016-15.html Kev

This Gen 2 engine never had tabbed bearings

Weve another 3.0 due in this week coming, with a late Gen 1 lump, which has failed, be interesting to see if it has them

Its not something I've ever seen before in either 2.7 or 3.0 engines

It'll be interesting to see if it does have tabbed bearings. It begs the question that if they did have the tabs later on in the gen 1 engines, why did they revert back in the gen 2s? Confused

I remember back earlier in the year, you said you hadn't had any 3.0s in with crank issues for a considerable time. They must be like buses, coming all at once Laughing Kev

Off Topic Question

Back to the OP and for clarity about L405s with the 3.0 TDv6 engine in them, aside to M99TYK’s L405 3.0 TDv6 failure that this thread is about, are the exchanges between knwatkins and Mikey on this thread actually about failures of L405s with the 3.0 TDv6 engine in other LR models (for me at least, a subtle but important point to clarify)?

We are talking about the specific issue that M99TYK has experienced, ie. a spun bearing in a 3.0 TDV6 and what contributes to this ie. tabs or no tabs.

To clarify, we are not specifically talking about any other LR model but we are specifically talking about the engine model in question (306DT). Kev

The one we have in currently, is an L494

The one due in this week coming is an L405

Both have the 306DT engine fitted

One done a few weeks back, one in now, and one due in this week Shocked

Along with 2 broken 2.7's too Neutral

Much the same with Defender chassis. Weve done 2 in the last 2 years, we now have one in progress, one waiting in the car park, and 3 due in as soon as we can get them done Shocked

So to clarify L405 stats wise, this thread adds M99TYK’s L405 3.0 TDv6 failure and an L405 3.0 TDv6 that is ‘due in this week’ with Mikey.

Both of those have a warranty? One is definitely covered (by an RAC warranty)? whether M99 is covered is yet TBC by M99TYK.

Thanks, that’s all the clarity that was sought because the examples of 3.0 TDv6 engines fitted to the L405 failing remain rare, and even less so (accepting that M99’s outcome is yet TBC), examples of L405 owners being left high and dry to foot the repair bill? ... Subtle but important detail relevant to the L405 experience 👍🏻

The 494 had a warranty

The 405 doesn't have a warranty, and is being recovered to us directly from the dealership, after a goodwill claim was rejected (as far as I am led to believe) and customer has been quoted £22,000 to replace the engine Shocked

Will get full details in the next few days

£22k Thud

A new short engine is £4750+VAT and that's the price for Joe Public. I assume it's still LR038138 for the L405, Mike? Kev

I have a 64 l405 Tdv6 56k full land rover history with extended land rover warranty, i am now worried about this crank shaft issue if/when it happens to mine do you think i am best to buy a WD policy to cover the engine as well as I don’t think anyone wants a 22k repair bill to wake up to..

My advice to you is to not worry about it. There are many thousands of these engines on the road and it only happens to a small percentage.

If you think it's too big a risk for you to feel comfortable with, as you suggest, buy a warranty. WD are good at paying out against these failures.

A £22k bill is only likely if you are willing to have your pants pulled down by a LR dealership. Kev
