Steering wheel..aghhh

Cant get the steering wheel off of a 2004 petrol. Need to replace something called the clock spring. Poked things down the two small holes on each side of the wheel but they dont release the airbag and switch assembly like they do in a video I've just watched. In te vid, it just pops off no trouble !!

These can be very fiddly. You need a small long screwdriver to fit in the hole. You can release one & then have it locate again, when you attempt to release the other side.
I have an old flat head screwdriver, which I have filed a V in the end of it.
What you are trying to do is release the spring holding the pin down, whilst apply a little pressure to the air bag. It doesn't need a lot of pressure, just aligning correctly.

***** Make sure that the vehicle has been shut down for at least 10 mins before attempting this***

Keep at it Thumbs Up

On my D3 I got an air bag removal tool. You have to locate the tabs inside and pull them outwards to release the airbag. There is a video by Powerful here that shows how to do it.

Ivan, Different tool & process for the L322 unfortunately.
The hole in the Air bag unit is only about 4 mm & the release spring is sat about 50 mm further in.
Powerful video is good though. Thumbs Up

@DaveK, You just have to keep fiddling with it until you hit the right spot.

Depending on what you have if you have a heated steering wheel and are buying a used clock spring, make sure that it specifies heated wheel on any listing. John

Finally removed with a lot of assorted things poked in the tiny holes ! That done, clock spring was a breeze.

Thumbs Up Gsxr1250dave's photo's should have helped. Looking at the second photo, you can see that it's missed a few times & how tricky it is. Whistle
