I am fully prepared to be laughed at for asking this but...

On a 4.4 TDV8 with the rotary gear selector, can you put it into Sport mode on the move?

Every other car I have driven with Sport mode has just allowed you to knock the selector sideways or similar to engage it but as the rotary selector requires pushing down to then allow it to be turned into Sport mode I just thought I'd check before I risk breaking anything. I can't see why it would be any different to taking over with the Command Shift paddles but I'd rather face ridicule on here than another garage bill!

Yes you can.

Once you're moving in "D", push the controller down and turn clockwise so it goes into "S".

Placing the 4.4 into sport mode is more like a supersport mode on these models... You'll find the car holds gears way up into the rev range and turns the whole car angry! I believe this is why they put the extra step into engaging sport mode, sir... So it's not done accidentally?

Holds gears longer.

It’s a gearbox mode, does nothing to the engine or suspension at all. never really saw the point tbh, especially as the paddles work in D.

So you have:

1: D
2: Flappy paddle D
3: S
4: Flappy paddle S

1 works for normal driving, 2 works for spirited driving, 3 is supposed to be for what? A relaxed spirited drive? If you are on a mission then just use 2. 4 has no point at all as it works pretty much the same as 2.... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I have no facts for it; but on my 5.0SC sports mode also seems to alter throttle response. At least it feels like it as the throttle barely needs touching compared to non sport. The dampers are dynamic anyway And I also have a button to open the valves of the exhaust for a straight pipe 😎

But it’s nothing like what is actually called super sport on the Mercedes AMG we had. Not that is unleashing the beast. Not just remake the gearbox, but also throttle and notable the steering; lowers the car, changes the damping, opens the exhaust valves, changes the colour of the dashboard, engages active seat support, and most importantly remake the drive train to have 80 of the power on the rear wheels.

Land Rover is very tame in my opinion.

The problem I find when using the flappy paddles in "D" is that as it wants to change up at such a low RPM, you find that telling it to change down is mostly pointless, as the gearbox changes back up almost immediately.

With it in S it'll hold onto the gear for longer and so telling it to change up or down is a bit more useful.

I do like being able to use the paddles to get ready for overtakes etc but do then find it frustrating when the car decides to take over again if I haven't changed gear for a few moments e.g. ready to overtake, flick down, change in traffic conditions means opportunity delayed but I want to stay ready, car takes over before I can make the manoeuvre.

Only Time I ever use S is when towing to get the car to hold a higher gear than it wants to in D. I agree that in S it does hold the manual selection properly, but tbh I don’t find myself driving in a way which requires much in the way of holding a lower gear.

If I want to hold a lower gear, or drive in a spirited way, then I drive the other car..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

S holds it in gear longer. I use it on slip roads to get above 2500rpm to regulary clear second turbo pipelines  2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE Buckingham Blue with Ivory and clear glass = "Rory"

Happy to be corrected but I thought sport mode also stiffened the dampers, mine feels tighter when driven spirited on bendy roads when in sport mode.

Nope. Does nothing to the dampers. It feels tighter when you drive in a spirited manner, because they are adaptive, they tighten up when you give it some... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
