United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Baltic Blue

That’s true!

Rob emailed earlier saying the transfer box had left Duckworth’s today so this evening I decided to sort out the headlights. Well, one of them! They were pretty grotty before.

Forgot to get a picture of the drivers side before so here’s the passengers as they both looked the same!

1st step was wet sanding with 800 grit discs.

2nd step was wet sanding with 1000 grit discs.

3rd step was 1500 grit which didn’t make much difference to the appearance so I didn’t picture it.

This was the 4th step wet sanding them with 3000 grit discs.

Finally I used a cutting polish to remove the fine scratches from the wet sanding.

Finished:

I didn’t bolt it back into the car as I still need to apply the UV Protective coating on them so I just positioned it and the grill in loosely to get a comparison shot.

It’s not perfect but it’s infinitely better then it was and considering it was my first time wet sanding headlights I’m quite happy with the results for now. Once I’ve got the mechanicals all sorted I’m pondering the idea of a 2012 facelift so I’m more then happy with these for now Smile

Give it another polish David then hit it with some kind of lacquer to protect from UV.
Thumbs Up

I’m thinking of doing the whole process again just to see if it’ll come up any sharper but there’s a big improvement already from what it started with.

I’ve got a tin of UV protection spray that I’ll give them a couple of coats of before they see daylight again Smile

They look good, sometimes it's the inside of the lens suffering from UV damage, have a close look before polishing again... Thumbs Up Pete

I bought this kit to do mine:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B075KF...d-M5R_52QE

It includes the sanding pads, polishing pad and compound and finally a UV protection spray.

TNT turned up with a delivery today… unfortunately nobody was home Big Cry

They’ve said they’ll be back tomorrow with the transfer box so I won’t be going anywhere tomorrow and will be working with my laptop right by the front door as I’m not missing this delivery Laughing

Hopefully we’re on the home straight again now.

A delivery arrived today Very Happy

Opening parcels is fun as they always contain shiny things!

I’ve refitted these several times now so it doesn’t take that long. I managed to get it refitted on my own other then the exhaust as that’s one piece from front to back and weighs a ton! The new transfer box is fitted, filled with oil, calibrated and has drive so that’s good.

I noticed previously that someone had snapped the stud in the offside manifold and had fitted a nut and bolt so this time I thought I’d sort it properly. First up was drilling it out.

Second step was to tap it to take an M8 helicoil.

Third step was to insert the helicoil

Fourth step saw the new stud correctly back in it’s place.

I put the UV protection spray on the headlights too so the car is now finished and ready to come out of the workshop tomorrow. The lights aren’t perfect but they’re a lot better then they were.

I was filthy when I’d finished tonight and there were other cars in the workshop so mine is waiting till tomorrow to be test driven.

Quite nervous tonight… after all this work (and cost) I’m praying that the bearing whine is now gone!

I’ve had the Range Rover for a run this afternoon and am pleased to report the whine has gone and the car is changing gear beautifully. There’s still a feint grumble from the front diff but it’s not bad so it can wait for a while. The oil I put in it in January is still clean so it can’t be doing much damage to itself and Cheryl can hardly hear it so it’s probably just me being OTT.

Anyway, long story short, I have a working Range Rover again Very Happy
