I'm tempted to say that the initial setting is correct, the variance is down to a difference in head gasket thickness or similar, I don't know why it's out but I do know that 'we' let rebuilt engines go with similar discrepancies, and they were still running sweetly a year later when in for service.

For it to be that far out after only 4 or so complete revolutions doesn’t sit right. This is my first time doing a chain, however, when doing belts they always pin straight up every time.

Going to make a couple of phone calls in the morning and see where we go from here.

I ventured back out into the workshop last night and checked everything over once more. I pinned the crank and checked the cams and they were just about where you’d expect them to be.

I spoke to our local Jaguar specialist this afternoon and he advised that when you’ve turned them over by hand it’s normal for them to be anywhere up to half a tooth out as there’s no oil pressure in the tensioners at this point.

I checked it again this evening with a fresh pair of eyes and I’m happy that the timing is within spec.

After that a little bit more progress was made…

I replaced the oil seal between the oil filter housing and the block as there was a huge oily mess down there so it was another “whilst I’m in here job”. That was after I’d spent ages scraping oily muck off the front and giving it a scrub with some degreaser.

The rest of the parts arrived today, 2 new o-rings for the front cover from Duckworths and a new Denso alternator.

O-rings are now fitted to the front cover, the new front oil seal is fitted to the front cover as well, and all of the bolt holes are numbered to make tightening it a bit less hassle.

Good idea with the numbering - I've never thought of that over the years... usually a printout taped to a stand, engine mount or wing top - or a laptop balanced somewhere precarious.
I usually give new seals a swipe of thin grease, helps them 'settle' when compressed and provides a barrier to engine oil on first run until the warmth has done it's stuff. Never had one leak, even on old, pitted castings.

There’s 24 bolts on that one so I thought I’d number them just for ease.

I gave the new seal a smear of engine oil around the edge before I fitted it into the front cover. I was going to do the same with the crankshaft pulley before fitting it through the new seal.

Cleaned up the faces tonight too, just need some instant gasket where the sump meets the crankcase, the crankcase meets the block and the heads meet the block before seating the front cover. Then it’s just a case of nip all the bolts by hand, then I’ll tighten them down to 6nm before putting the final torque to 12nm.

There’s nothing difficult with reassembly, it’s just going to all be a bit time consuming.

Just hope I don’t find anything else that I’ve forgotten to order.

Watch the date on the sealant, I've seen some stuff close to it's expiry that never really 'set', eventually the oil pushed a route through it.

I used to really enjoy rebuilds, I worked for a company a good few years ago that had 52 Volvo Penta 16 litre prime genset engines to overhaul, these were stripped completely, measured, results sent to Volvo who determined which components were to be replaced. The engines were rebuilt with all the part positions documented, then run in at 110% load (these were running 500kW prime gensets) for 24 hours, the loadbank was pretty warm but not as warm as the exhaust manifold and turbo - the loadbank made a good snow blower!

Just a tad annoying! Like Groundhog Day around here 🤭🫢🫣🙄

Have ordered the last few bits from Duckworths this morning.

Decided to replace the pipes running under the supercharger to save problems in the future as removing the supercharged is a bit of a pain.

I was also going to replace the 2 heater hoses that had been t’d into for the LPG so that there were less places for them to leak. However, 2 rubber hoses with quick release couplers on them were going to be over £300. I think I’m going to order a 3m length of 16mm internal diameter silicon hose and make them. The originals are shaped but I think the curves are gradual enough that silicon will do the trick without kinking.

I don’t suppose anyone has a photograph of where the metal plate that holds the plug for the knock sensors bolts to on the 4.2 SC do they? Mine wasn’t attached to anything when I stripped it down and was sitting loose under the charger. I’d like it to be right when it goes back together.

Changed my mind… those pipes are different diameters at each end and are shaped to fit the brackets on the bulkheads.

More money handed over to Duckworths.

I’d decided last night I was going to replace the PCV valve again. Only this time it was because it had reacted with the degreased I’d used. It looks awful here and it visible once the engine cover is refitted.

However, a PCV valve for this car from LR used to be £20. They’re now £50 so I decided I wasn’t throwing £50 away because I didn’t like how my 4k mile one looked. So today, I dyed the plastic.
