Just an idea,..If it’s a very late L322 maybe it was seen as a prototype for the L405 ?.
Early L405 didn’t have the mod, but I don’t know at what stage they had it done at production.

Its not the first time ive used this crazy logic, in the past when ive fancied a car ive hunted down a broken one, that way i can do my best to future proof it and put right any wrongs properly as i go, i usually take them on myself but the range rover was a bit too much for me, luckily i have a friend that does this stuff regularly, hopefully it will make a nice example once done and if i keep a record of everything should make it easy to sell if i decide not to hang on to it.

It must have been modified at some time then.
The day I took mine in to the MD for the mod, I spoke to the mech who was given the job and he pointed to an L405 and said “ I have just finished that one”.

An early vehicle which could easily have been one of the earliest to suffer the smoke problem, possibly after already having had the secondary turbo replaced but the problem persisted.

An 04/14 build L405 on this forum had a factory-fitted slightly different twin drain but L405s started with the same single drain as the L322.

My friend is an old school mechanic and very much into doing things right, hes just called saying hes disgusted with how the oilcooler sits on the sandwich plate to the block, he said the cast of the sandwich plate is disgraceful and no wonder they all leak, he said, when you place the cooler on unbolted it rocks and in places has 30 thou gap, pulls down with bolts but he finds that very poor engineering.

And probably not helped either, by the constant heating up and cooling down.....

Oh yes, for sure. It’s such a common issue now. The specialist that did mine about 5 years ago, hadn’t done many oil coolers. Within a year they had done over a dozen....

this is why i replaced the whole cooler!! have to say when i put the new one on it did not rock. but equally i did not have the engine on a stand either. perhaps that is why they have the rubber compression gaskets i did find them odd given the bif temp swings they go through.

I wanted to change my thermostat while at no other reason that the car was in bits, but the housing is plastic and prone to braking when trying to remove and i could not find anyone with one in stock + they are expensive. so i left it. 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - Current

Mine certainly didn't rock when I fitted new gaskets. I would not have proceeded with such a condition.
