Turbo Actuator, Turbo boost control solenoid

Hi Folks

Does anyone have any ideas on how much work the following is:

Turbo actuator (replace)
Turbo boost control solenoid (remove, strip & rebuild)

- Approximately how many hours?
- Will this require lifting the chassis?
- Is this a 1 man or 2 man job?

Thanks! 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 Santorini Black - Current

And perhaps a lot more on the background as to why would help, which all are happy to do. Thumbs Up Cheers

Oops!!
Smile

It's a 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8

The why
I'm getting a Restricted Performance warning after the car is driven for between 25 - 35 mins

Issue 1
Diagnostics has brought up the following code: PO046-77
Turbo/supercharger boost control
Solenoid - Circuit range/performance

Issue 2
On starting the engine (only when started from cold), I get a squeaking, squealing noise similar to a misaligned belt. (the belt was changed recently so it's not that)

Issue 3
On switching off, after being driven for over 20 mins, a clicking noise can be heard for about 5 mins and then it stops
(turbo switching back and forth on actuator?)

Generally speaking though, she drives well, does not smoke, and prior to Limp mode, does not lose any power.

I am prepping myself for the dreaded chat with my mechanic Shocked 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 Santorini Black - Current

I'll happily go down in flames!!!!

On item 3 stick your head under the bonnet and tell us where you think the noise is coming from. Front-ish central? Pop the engine cover off and listen/feel if there's anything about. May help.

Others with more sense will be along. Cheers
Richard

Was just the belt changed or were the pulleys also changed? Initial squeaking or squealing suggests dry pulley bearings.

Depending on when your engine was built, the secondary air change-over valve may be the early version that can become sticky. Lots of threads on here about spotting it to determine if an early one or not.

I would ignore any noises after switch-off as they will be either the EGR valve being exercised trying to keep it clean for clicking or injectors being given ultrasonic cleaning for the high pitched squeal.

There is no chassis to lift the body off unless you have a Sport [think I'm correct?].
I have a '12 plate Westminster & when I hit 2750-3000rpm the dreaded red 'restriction' flashed up, stopped the car, locked her up & came back 5 mins later, no 'restricted performance'. Cut a long story short, the second turbo is part of the sequential system & don't come out to play until you hit close to 3000rpm. My Indy stripped & cleaned the actuator & she's perfect now.

I would go with GraemesS thought on the pulley being dry & cold on start up.

When you say "after 25-35mins" is that normal driving? Up hills when you're asking the old girl to work for her keep? High speed-low speed? If so, could be the old 'donut' hoses need replacing with silicone ones?

Hope this helps. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

Thanks for the help/tips Guys

@rjff - Noise seems to be coming from the driver's side

@GraemeS - Primary and secondary belts, tensioner, pullies, pulley fan, and bracket were all changed 5 months ago.
Saying that, perhaps they did not apply enough lubricant? - I will be very upset if this is the problem Sad

@Fox889 - Take your point on suggested - Actuator strip & clean
"after 25-35mins" - this is me driving 70 mph on the motorway and then 25-35 mph within town

@Baltic blue - Thanks for this.

My big worry is the PO046-77

Are you in restricted performance?

90% of issues with the 4.4TDV8 are boost leaks from pipework.

I had an actuator error code (can't remember if it was the same as yours) and in the end it was false.

Guess what it was..?

It was a boost leak.

So if you're in restricted performance then's I'd have a good look at your hoses. Search "donut hoses"

. Cheers, Greg

Lubricant isn't applied to the pulleys which use a so-called sealed bearing.

@GGDR thanks, will check them all and share my findings

@GraemeS - hmmm 360-degree turn Smile - so if it's not pulleys needing lubrication, what could it be...?

Be ready to spray water onto the belt to see if the noise stops. If it stops then the belt is very likely the culprit.

Another way to prove or eliminate 'belt squeal' is do what my Indy did........dived into his tool box and came out with a container of...........Johnsons Baby powder! [other similar makes are available]. He squirted this on the belt, fired her up & quietness. You can always buy expensive 'anti squeal' spray but this stuff absorbs any moisture [cause of the squeal] and after cleaning off any powder, all sorted!
