My New RR 3.6 TDV8 Has Just Broken Down Turbo/ or EGRs

Hey Folks.

So, I've been lurking around this forum for a while over the past few years and have had many RRs with many problems!

Anyways, I recently purchased a fairly clean RR 3.6 TDV8 Vogue SE with 127,000 miles.

Having had a previous RR inject it's EGRs and knacker the engine I decided this time to blank my EGRs.

Did this today and all was well... untill!

I was accelerating with full throttle then pop and sudden power loss.

I pulled in and noticed a lumpy idle, and little white smoke (not alot).

I plugged in my scanner and it came up with EGR faults, but nothing else.

So what are we thinking folks EGRs or Turbos?

It's a 2008 RR 3.6 TDV8.

Afraid I didn't map out he EGRs. Was going to do it this evening.

It does seem like something failed though.

I felt a sudden change in pressure, like a pop.

No EML until 20 seconds after said pop.

I scanned the faults and then noted three EGR fails, which even after clearing didn't improve the lump idle.

Wouldn't rev much either.

I had a look and didn't see any cracks. All were attached.

I'm really starting to think turbo.

Hopefully not more damage done.

Twice, if such is the case that I lost an engine in a tdv8 because of egrs and turbos...

Hopefully not.

Hopefully it’s not that, and something daft.

I skipped the 3.6. It’s not really cricket if you get clobbered twice.

If you recently purchased it, have you no redress with the seller?

Hopefully not..

Will know more in the next few days. Currently awaiting the machinaic to review it.

Private sale and he's in Liverpool and I'm in Ireland so no luck. Anyways he's a decent fellow, this is just one of those things.

Just hoping we can get her running again. I plan to use it for the honeymoon in August in Scotland.

Did you clear the codes? The EGR should in theory be isolated from the engine now, even if it fails the performance should be good and you get codes. Mine throws the odd code about one EGR bank issue, but it usually goes away on restarting. I have blanked the EGRs.

How about the turbo actuators, maybe give them an exercise and oil. Passenger side tricky but doable. 2009 TDV8 3.6

I cleared the fault codes, but currently the only ones showing is

P140A - Exhaust Gas Recirculation C - Circuit Low
P1623 Immobiliser Code
P010C Mass or volume air flow b - Circuit Low

Now I did some digging around this evening to have a look at her.

Here's what I've noticed thus far.

Oil Level is fine no drops.
Coolant is slightly low, but not sure if it was like this before hand.
The two intercooler pipes have a small amount of oil in them, but nothing out of the ordinary.

The mechanic is going to look at it tomorrow to see what he can discover. I will then report back. I'm really hoping it's something simple.

It was like something just went pop, and then the lumpyish idle started!! Sad

These hoses had a very small amount of oil in them, nothing out of the ordinary.

This hose on the left hand side was slightly crushed has if it was sucked inwards?

This is all I have so far folks!

The hoses can collapse as they weaken with age. That’s why many folk swap them out for silicone ones.

What would the symptoms of a callasped hose be like?

Would it cause the problems I'm describing?

Hopefully it's a simple fix!!

If you haven't already replaced those 2x top hoses it's worth doing anyway as sooner or later they WILL split. But also if they're starting to collapse you're going to get and airflow restriction which may well explain the fault codes you're getting. You should be able to get the pair for around £120, and they only take around 20 mins to fit.

Thanks Sam for the advice. I changed the hoses on my last 3.6 so will likely do the same with this one. Currently still none the wiset as to the problem. Once I determine the current fault I will decide what to do.

I'm still hopeful nothing was sucked into the engine with turbo failure if that is what happened.

Hey Folks.

So It's bad news!

The LH Turbo has failed. The mechanic is stripping it tomorrow to see what damage if any has befalen the engine.

1. Oil out the LH intercooler hose.
2. Lumpy Idle, he doesn't think any damage has been caused to the engine.

This is where I'm at.

Hopefully engine is OK, because this car was bought for my honeymoon for touring Scotland later in the summer!
