Corrosion issues?

Being all aluminium, corrosion shouldn't be a problem, right?

We have a 2014 SDV8 in currently. It was actually in a few weeks ago for a service, on the service we noted leaking rear ARC pipes and leaking rear HVAC pipes. Nothing unusual there, it's 7 years old with nearly 100k miles

So, it was back in today for the work to be carried out. Subframe down without any dramas

But look closer at the last picture...




That is quite frightening on a £100,000 car of that age. The other side was better, but still holed. Thankfully not structural, but strictly speaking, within 30cm of a suspension mount, and would be an MOT failure. And mostly hidden underneath the steel bracket from the front subframe mount...

That’s a bit scary. One of the advantages of going from L322 to L405 was to not worry too much about rust….

Why can’t they use better steel… same on the last L322…..

That, looks like electrolysis to me? dissimilar metals together with saltwater create electrolysis?

Correct. Big steel spreader plate on top of each subframe mount, in direct contact with the body...

Assume a thin foam gasket would break the contact between the two dissimilar metals and stop the galvanic corrosion occurring?

Would have thought LR would be well up to speed on this given all their experience with the original Defender… Whistle

If the body has some flex between the mating surfaces then the water will capillary between to start it off? boats, outboard motors,l that is in contact with salty water has a sacrificial anode.
Which is old knowledge? I would have thought JLR would know this?

Other manufacturers cope on cheaper cars than a RR, why dont RR do a bit of R&D into corrosion protection????? BMW i3 Electric Car

What a depressing thread. My 2017 405 has had various bolts around the headlight mounts replaced due to galvanic corrosion (visible white furring) and one on the lower tailgate under the flap at the back of the tailgate (just rust there). The dealers said they were well used to replacing the bolts around the headlights. Scotland will be particularly bad for corrosion with so much salt on the roads and lots of wet weather.

Incidentally the dealers said before they installed the new bolts they coated them with some tarry substance to reduce the contact between the different metals, adding it was disappointing LR did not do that. So unlikely LR do much on the areas highlighted by Mikey.

I got the impression that LR had instructed dealers not to look for this sort of thing, but just to respond when customers found it. Not helpful. LR made quite an effort to rustproof the P38, given the bad PR generated by rusty Classics, but that seems to have been abandoned with effect from the 322, presumably on the basis they would build for a global market and only a small proportion of production would be used in places like Scotland. I moved from 322 to 405 because I was fed up with having to have rust treated every year (from 2yo) , but while the 405 does not show corrosion in the same way, it may be worse in some respects because it is causing structural problems one can't readily see.

Mikey, if I want to ask the dealers to check on this on my car what is the best description of the place to look? Only Range Rovers since 1988

That's scary. Especially given that it's above the subframe and can't be easily inspected.

Could that lead to the rear subframe becoming insecure seeing as that's a subframe mounting bolt?

I take it without removing the bolts and dropping the subframe there's no way to spot anything on this?

Definitely dissimilar corrosion going on there. Moisture forms the electrolyte and the fizzing begins. Sad to see a poor choice of materials there and a lack of separation between the steel and aluminium. 2017 Range Rover Vogue V6 Diesel

I think the problen in this thread on the L405 https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic55957.html which i have suffered at great expense is down to two dissimilar metals and galvanic corrosion occurring or it might just be a bad batch of knuckles.

Lost my 2014 ATB to corrosion. 70k miles. Over $30k in damage. Probably would have been over $40k had I done the repairs. Rusted sunroof drain flooded the vehicle interior.
