I bet there is a little bit more to it as why would a garage let it go that cheaply when it just needs a forced regenerate? Then again we got my daughters Evoque Dynamic Plus very cheaply as none of the 4wd system nor dynamic modes worked, and all it required was a new wiring loom on the suspension. It could be a bargain, or it could not be...

I think TD6 is probably the way forward, and then move to a 4.4TDV8 later from the comments given budget constraints on initial purchase. Pre ‘06 plate to take advantage of the lower tax (why not?) and have a safety net for any major repairs.

I’ll put a wanted post out at some point in February, as c.3months should be enough time to find one. In the meantime if any come up I’ll keep an open mind about moving a little earlier.

Just buy the car you want, forget the financial side.

You could buy a 4.4 and have no problems, you could buy a 'well looked after' td6 and the box Censored itself within a few months. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE - 'Black Betty'

Td6 will be cheapest to buy and run.
tdv8 body/chassis have same rust problems.
4.4 have also "turbo problems" just like 3.6. They last more km/mi. Both tdv8 engine were great at the time. Long oil change interval, short trips, constant low rpms and load will bring big bill sooner or later to current or next owner.
4.4 tdv8 gets a lot of Thumbs Up here but mostly from people who drive it few times a year or keep it for short period.
zf6 and zf8 boxes also need rebuild and it costs significantly more. Same goes for all the parts.
German carmakers used v8 diesel for short period of time and ditched them(yes, there is sq7, i know). Because it is diesel you would think the v8 will last and live longer than smaller r6 but it is opposite. tdv8 greatness comes with the cost of reliability(used cars 100k+ miles). Just my 2 euro cents.

Voted for td6. Would buy v8 petrol Smile

What concerns me about so much red and orange isn’t that it needs a tyre and possibly had some play somewhere, but that it is year on year on year the same. This is clearly not a car that has been maintained, and it could indicate a previous owner who only has done the bare minimum.

These aren’t the vehicles to do the bare minimum, that will really cost big time in the long run. So unless handy with a spanner and wrench I would give this a miss.

^^ exactly.

It shows a lack of maintenance. One offs, sure, but every single MOT? Nah, I'll pass. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE - 'Black Betty'

That’s not the DVLA MOT check is it? How do you get that view of MoT history in red, amber, green?

Also to close out. If I relocate Mr Dronfields vote from the tdv8 to td6 like stated in the posts, then td6 edges it in the circumstances. So Thankyou all

Yes, it’s this one.

I sit there trying to remember the reg of old family cars, trying to see if they are still on the road and the last time a new owner was registered.

Sounds like a plan…. Tidy TD6…. Change the crankcase filter for the later BMW vortex type and fit an EGR removal kit. Sorted.
