How much transmission oil needed on change

Hi guys just had a transmission oil change done today on my L405 4.4 SDV8 I was advised to buy 8 litres of transmission fluid but isn’t this only if doing a mega flush through a machine the job only needed 5 litres of fluid is this right or has the gearbox been under filled?
Cheers

A single drop from the gearbox and you will drain bang on 3 litres. I did a quadruple drop/refill when I did mine on the driveway. Kev

Hi Kev what do you mean by a quadruple drop exactly.

When you drain the gearbox oil via the drain plug, you are only able to drain a proportion of it (3 litres) because the majority of it is held within the torque converter. By doing multiple drain and refill cycles, priming the gearbox in between, you will progressively be diluting the old oil with new, thereby refreshing it.

See my post near the bottom of the first page of my thread here... https://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic57338.html

Any questions, please shout Thumbs Up Kev

If the gearbox oil is changed at the MD do they do what you have done kn and change it multiple times, I wonder.

I would imagine they would flush with a flushing machine. Kev

The dealer will follow the workshop instruction - essentially, drop oil, remove sump pan & filter, fit new sump pan & filter, replenish oil & correct level. No flushing involved.

With a new sump & filter, mine took 5.6l @30deg. C. on a level ramp, the last 0.6l went in a couple of weeks later when I had chance to level check at the correct temperature. If you are not dropping the transmission sump, then the refill quantity will be lower.

In that case they have not replaced all of the old oil as Kev has pointed out.
