Electronic Handbrake Fault

My handbrake has been working fine since I got the car back on the road after the bedding in process was carried out.

Today, I nosed the car into the shed, put the suspension on high and put the handbrake on before jacking the front of the car to change the front right tyre.

When I’d got the wheel back on the car I dropped it down, torqued the wheel nuts and jumped in the car to take it for a run. I immediately noticed the dashboard showing a handbrake fault error on the message centre. I also had the amber handbrake light on solid and the red one flashing.

Pulling the switch up and pressing it down makes no difference at all.

I put the car in gear and the handbrake was holding it. Thankfully a gentle dab of the throttle got the handbrake to drop off so I could move it.

I then plugged the IID in and was getting this error:

When clearing the fault it comes straight back. Now it’s dropped off the handbrake switch isn’t putting it back on. The IID unjam procedure works on the module as I can hear it doing its thing.

When looking at the live values, the switch input just shows “Error”.

There seems to be a lot of info about this on the Discovery but very little about it on the L322 when Googling it. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Any water or fluid ingress?
The switches are not as prone to failure as the L319's due to having better 'splash shield' but it's not unknown.

Not as far as I’m aware. Not been anything spilt inside it.

Will have a look at how easy it is to remove the switch and see about trying another to rule it out.

The error and flashing handbrake light are when the system detects movement, so changes in suspension height and jacking etc would effect this. You're better to chock the wheels instead of apply the parking brake.

Have you tried disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes then clearing any faults as necessary?

Also, only apply the parking brake once you've changed suspension height, not before. The wheels require a little rotation when changing height, as again this can chuck up a fault. 2015 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 SDV8

Well that's a new one on me. All those years in a JLR dealer and I never came across that, you'd think I would have really.
You have seen the DTC?

I can’t get the car in the workshop or near the ramp at the moment so I slid under it and had a look at the plug on the handbrake. Everything looks ok with no obvious loose or broken wires.

I was going to remove the centre console to get a look at the switch today but I decided that seeing as a used switch on eBay was 15 quid I’d rather wait to dismantle it until I had a spare switch.

Will update with more as I test the new switch.

Does the IID allow you to put the parking brake on/off David?

U2002 is either a faulty switch, or a damaged wire between the switch and EPB module Thumbs Up

Seen a few wiring looms chafe on the brake pipes after replacement

Cheers Guys

Craig - My IID only allows me to execute an unjam procedure, I can’t find an option to toggle the handbrake on or off.

Mikey - that makes sense after all of the work done at the rear. I’ll need to do some digging and see how I get on.

The replacement switch I'd ordered arrived yesterday so I've just given it a go.

Exactly the same symptoms.

The fault cleared itself when I popped out earlier so I applied the handbrake and it went on OK but wouldn't go off. Tried the other switch and it did the same so I'm guessing that it's definitely a wiring fault unfortunately.

Where does the wiring going to the handbrake start from? I'm wondering if it's worth trying to make a new loom from somewhere to the handbrake module if I can source a plug with some tails from somewhere?

Thanks guys,

I finally managed to get a look under the car on the ramp tonight.

The cable going to the handbrake looks to be chaffed on the subframe. I can’t see any exposed copper strands but I can’t inspect it properly.

The cable disappears to the front of the car presumably towards the handbrake switch and it also disappears to the rear where it goes into the NSR wheel arch, presumably where it joins the main loom so I can’t pull it down to expose it.

Can the wiring loom be freed enough to do a repair with the subframe in situ or does it mean removing the exhaust, heatshield, propshaft and then dropping the subframe? I really hope not as I can’t be bothered Laughing 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

I finally managed to get time to sort the parking brake issue today. When inspecting the wiring loom there was a green blob on it. It hadn’t chaffed on anything which was my initial suspicion.

Upon removing the insulation there was a yellow wire that had ballooned with green corrosion. Upon touching it the wire fell apart. I’ve repaired that and the handbrake now works perfectly.

Anyway, I cut the cable in the loom back until the core was nice and clean. Tinned the ends of the cable with some solder and laid in a little repair piece of cable with some heat shrink over both ends. I’ve then wrapped the loom in tape to cover it all up.

Handbrake now testing ok. Thumbs Up 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather

Does anyone know if a low battery could also give the same fault code? The reason I ask is that after being parked up for 2 weeks, I have the same issue.
Have swapped out the switch with no change and fuses have been checked also. If you don't know what you're doing - do it quickly!

I don't think so from what Mikey posted above, unfortunately.
