Lots Of Black Smoke!

big problem folks, I have a TD6 and when around 2000-2500rpm and at 30mph there's tons of black smoke coming out the exhausts and when on full acceleration it seems as if there is air blowing out the front blowers but no air con on, initial thought was the turbo was gone but it doesn't seem to be loosing that much power and been told it could be a burst pipe somewhere from the intercooler to the turbo, any one have any other ideas?

Cheers

I would still check the turbo - same happened to mine didnt seem to lose that much power but about 30mph plus and I got that smoke - turbo knackered - Landy have a bit of a shortage on them too. Not cheap. Mine was over 2 grand inc fitting Big Cry

Although did get 1K of that back through the warranty Id taken out. Cool 2006 MY Autobiography. With 'toys'

Someone else mentioned this the other day and they were told to change the breather on the rocker cover. There on ebay for about £20 so might be worth a try before you go spending £1k on turbo etc. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

saying that about the rocker cover there is a bit of oil across the engine cover and just below the fuel filter, I checked that the oil filter was tight as that's where it looks like it coming from and it's ok so could be that

Im not 100% ofay with the TD6 but this is the thread from the other day : http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic6722.html

It mentions a rocker breather and seems quite common on the BMW forums and smoky TD6's [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

Isn't black smoke a sign of over fuelling, and blue/grey smoke would be a sign of burning oil ?

Hello,

How many miles on the truck? I would be shocked if you had a low miles truck and the turbo was faulty. 2003 RR 4.4 only 40k miles (current)
2004 RR 4.4 ( just sold)
2000 RR 4.6 (sold)

1959 series 2 109
1956 series 1 1956

it has done 74k, change the small rocker filter on the range and still blowing black smoke, does it take a good few miles to clear all the crap out?

On a petrol yes. On a diesel blue smoke can also be unburnt fuel as well as burning oil..

Might also be worth checking to see if an intercooler hose has collapsed.

Could be a split turbo hose?

I had the same symptoms as you described on my mercedes e270 CDI estate, £25's worth of hose later and it was sorted Thumbs Up

Even made the same noise as you describe, like the front vents are blowing full on, but without actually being on
