Unusual Lower Tailgate problem

I have a slightly different lower tailgate problem.

When I open the rear tailgate using the kick gesture, both halves open. When I press the close button on the lower tailgate it closes but it won’t open again nor open using this switch in any other mode.
When I open the upper tailgate using button or driver’s internal button only the top opens, the lower remains closed and the switch on the lower tailgate does nothing.
The fact it closes when I use gesture, suggests the switch works.
I’ve tried the logic reset with tailgate fully open and pressing the upper switch for 10 seconds.

Any ideas?

Everything moves smoothly, suggesting no friction, lube or alignment issue. I’m think switch dodgy but as it works with gesture I’m not so sure. 1998 Freelander XEdi

@WeeJ:

Sorry I can’t help with your tailgate issue, but you might want to disable your gesture tailgate anyway, which also means disabling keyless entry to help prevent “relay theft” at the same time? Were you aware of this?

I think the dash button only opens the upper liftgate in any case, not both, but the fob (or gesture) should open both. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Hi WeeJ,

See: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&...i=89978449

Strongly recommended to do this immediately. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

I too would recommend deactivating the keyless function... Thumbs Up

Deactivated.

Rubbers all okay, checked both sensors and they operate. They sense obstructions on closing and stop further movement. But when closed these sensors are not operated against the body of the car. Doesn’t look to be out of line so `i suspect they’re not meant to. anyone know if there’s do or they should? 1998 Freelander XEdi

You are right, -if they were activated by closure, it would be the same as an obstruction, and open the gate. Not the desired result! Laughing “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?

Have you checked your battery SOH?

Operating the tailgate uses a significant current, and can cause system voltage to drop and interfere with all sorts. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” -where’s the fun in that?
